My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

I thought I had seen this discussed before but I couldn't find a thread about... sorry if it's a repeat.

Since I've been here I go through these rather extended, wildly pendular, "bipolar" periods, lasting a few days to a few weeks each. I can only describe them as:

Love) "oh my gaaaawd, Switzerland is so wonderful, I love it here, it's so beautiful, oh look the mountains are so lovely, that cow just told me to have a nice day, oh and everyone is so nice and they say "Grüezi" so cutely, oh I really want to grow up to be Swiss!!!!"

and

Hate) "get off the road you morons 80kmh in a tunnel what is this sh@@? stop that yodeling nonsense Swiss German doesn't even sound like a real language wtf popcorn get off of the sidewalk before I eat your brains for luuuuuuunch!!!!!"

Of course during the "LOVE" phase I really do love it here and I am proud to say I live in Switzerland, and content to make my life here. But during the "HATE" phase, every little thing gets under my skin and annoys me and I just want to pack up everything in the house, quit my job and go back home. That I even think like that scares me, and I try really hard not to let this phase be reflected openly. But it's really hard.

I feel my social life has adapted well, the language isn't a problem, and there's plenty that keeps me occupied. In fact, I've adjusted enough that the thought of going back home rather tears at me because then it means breaking off the relationships that I've formed here and undoing so many of the roots that I've set in place... even if those roots are shallow.

Does anyone else go through this sort of cycle of highs and lows, at least in the first year(s)?

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

My first 8 () years were more of a hate relationship, with a bit of love thrown in. This last year it's almost all love, so much so that I get a nice feeling in my stomach when I think that I'm here to stay. This last bit worries me, though. Am I getting sick in the head?

So you never felt like this anywhere else? When we lived in Chapel Hill, NC, I had a hate with the occasional like thrown in, here, I've pretty much been quite happy. But for me at least, I think it's more an internal thing.

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

If you're happy where you are, where's the problem?

My first four years were up north (ZH), don't know if I'd still be here 22 years later if I hadn't moved south.

Now, I can't imagine wanting to live anywhere else.

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

I wouldn't use words like "love" or "hate", but for sure there are ups and downs just about every day. like anywhere else I've ever lived, I find that the best way to appreciate Switzerland is to head elsewhere for a week or two.

A lot of places are just the same. Usually it comes down to some variant of 'What a lovely country. Too bad about all the people' (in Oz, substitute 'flies' for 'people')

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

There are things I like and things are dislike but I haven't experienced phases (apart from the first 4-8 weeks) where I loved or hated everything. Might be a question of personality that you feel so strong about your new home. Doesn't mean you're suffering from bipolar disorder though.

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

My first year in Istanbul, I hated it almost everyday. It was my first country and I had a very hard time to adjust. By the end of the first year, I could speak the language and I began to like it. I had a wonderful time.

We moved to Switzerland and I didn't have any love. No hate either. But I know I wasn't in love.

It as been 7 months we are under the sun and I love love love it. I am still in the honeymoon and I enjoy every moment.

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

I'm having a very hard time here now and I know a lot of it has to do with the weather. Most of my life I've lived in warmer climates and even when I did (for a brief 5yrs) live in cold, windy Chicago area, we still had more sunshine than we've had here this year in Basel.

So, if you're feeling a "hate" moment, try to analyze the source. Maybe it's "just" a lack of sunshine?

I had love hate all the time living in Lausanne.

Now in Zurich I am mainly feeling the love. Everything is so much more efficient here.

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

10 years & counting of the same in the Valais!

I was too busy with two young children to truly feel the downs for a while, although the frustrations have always been evident, due to the inflexibility, narrowmindedness, 'holier than thou' approach of a lot of Valaisans mostly.

Then my kids started school, and the lows got lower. There seems no room to for anyone who isn't 'average' & doesn't fit into their little scheme of the world. I have to put up with my kids suffering Victorian pedagogical techniques & teachers who quite frankly seem to hate children, & kids very much seem to be at the mercy of individual teachers, who in our village could be 'teaching' them for 2 or 3 years!? A highlight has been being fined 400 francs having asked to take my kids out of school for *ONE* day in order to go back to the UK to celebrate my 40th with my children and family, & deciding to go anyway when my request was 'refused', as I'd already booked flights, car etc & all my family were going to be there...my error was apparantly telling the truth, had I have lied & said they had a tummy bug, I wouldn't have been fined, the Cantonal inspector informed me....

But days like today skiing above a sea of clouds on empty pistes, the scenery, nipping up for a couple of hours skiing during an afternoon off & I'm higher than a kite....until some w***** feels the need to point out that I'm parked slightly over a line in the ski lift car park, & I shouldn't be slotted onto the end, even though I am not doing anyone any harm, not blocking anyone or anything & we're talking about a matter of cms over the line...least of all him bothering him, as he's parked the other end of the carpark & is about to leave!? Yet he won't leave it as I'm 'doing wrong' & he feels it's his duty to tell me so, the people here quite frankly send me insane, so I try not to have anything to do with them anymore, sad, but true, all my friends are foreigners...

No....you're not alone!!!

Thanks for the comments everyone. Maybe a bit of it is the winter blues. And maybe part of it is the exactness of Swiss precision. But it is good to know "it's not just me".

Yesterday I was like a total slug. I didn't hate it here, but I was mostly interested in doing nothing. I think the weather had a lot to do with it. Total gray ugh. Today is not much better tho....

Re: My BiPolar Love/Hate Relationship with CH

I mostly love living here in Switzerland, the weather, the countryside, the towns and cities. Sometimes the language problems have made me want to run back to my home country of England. When I visit home I love to just wander around listening to the local accent, and the fact I can go into a shop without working out what I have to say first (I am trying to learn German, but am doing it on my own and it takes time)
This past month we have had to find a new place to live (not through choice) and this has made the thought of going home very appealing, we have still got our house which is being rented out, I have been pining for it recently!
Now though we have found our new flat, we move in soon and I'm hoping then that life will calm down and we can return to our previous state of loving this country.
