Ladies.

Once again, there is a common misuse of the term "au pair" on EF. In a few words, it is a special "legal" status normally reserved for young girls (normally < 20) who are in CH, or another linguistic area of CH to learn the local language. They are a "mother's helper" with limited responsibility, limited hours per week, language classes, lower net salary, the type of work permit, live in etc. etc. (do a bit of research please).

The other type of job that has more responsibility, more hours (40+), etc. etc. is more of what I call a "nanny" or "household help".

When you are asking questions on EF or elsewhere, discussing with the family, be sure you are calling an apple an apple. Do not (as many others have said) get sucked into a job title and salary of "au pair" with full responsibility for 3 kids under the age of 10 for 40+ hours per week.

So, in short, there are TWO types of jobs looking after children. One with low responsibility, lower salary for normally younger women and a second for someone who can manage kids on her own, can work independently and is working significantly more hours each week.

Be clear with which one you are discussing.

Hi, I am due to come to Zurich next month and have been told it is very expensive, could you tell me if 1800 swiss franc per month is enough for me to be able to entertain myself, buy clothes etc??
Thanks
I can tell you what we had planned for our `paid help` as I`m not sure it`s safe to call it Au-pair or Nanny !!

A 24 yrs old girl from TX. We will pay her health insurance, her online university courses (she`s finishing her last 15 undergraduate hours) and we will also buy her an annual Zurich kanton train-tram pass. She`s expected to work 40hours a week, she will be living with us, eating with us, if we go for holidays or any weekend getaway she will be joining us and we will pay her (CHF1500) a month as pocket money ! My husband did the calculations and thought CHF 375 a week is good enough for her to pay her phone bill and go out eating-drinking or buying cloths in a reasonable way.

We are not sure how it will work, as it`s our first live-in nanny and it`s our first baby !

I hope this is any help or answers any of your questions!

I'm an Au Pair and have been for 1 year and a half. I live in Kanton Aargau and the Au Pair salary is lower than in Kanton Zurich. BUT in Zurich the salary is between 700-900 (900 the most, unless you are at some hidden agreement with the host family and you do more and they pay you more). In 2011, the Au Pair salary went up with 100chf (at least in Kanton Aargau), I don't know about the other ones.
You are from UK so here you have some info.
http://www.awa.zh.ch/internet/volksw...17/aupair.html
http://www.awa.zh.ch/internet/volksw...gestellte.html
There are some links on the second link, down. Somewhere it says that you should be paid between 700chf-800chf but that paper is from 2009. As I said, in 2011 in the Kanton that I live , the Au Pair salary went up with 100chf. If this is a general rule then now you should be paid 800chf-900chf.
thanks for this useful link.. requirements needed when someone needs an au pair from non eu is also included .. a friend of mine before needed someone to just to bring and fetch her daughter from private school because she had to work

I don't understand. Are you paying her 1500 a month or 375 a month? Is she non-EU? Have you already applied for the permit for her? What kind of permit is she getting?

If you did this under the 'au pair' scheme she can not work 40 hrs a week and can not be left alone with the children for long periods of time.

Verbier did clarify above.

I never said she`s an au-pair ! thanks for extra info on laws! we already checked with the authorities and she`s ok and approved. She is 24 with a bachelor degree (early childhood) she is more than trusted to be with our child on her own. She is not an EU citizen, but she is my relative, she`ll get 1500 a month ! plus all the extras I mentioned in my first post.

Approved as in you got a permit for her?! On those terms?

Do you also pay unemployment insurance and retirement contributions?

I didn't say that you said she was an au pair. That's why I asked the question.

It's very difficult to get "domestic help" visas for non-EU citizens, but not as difficult for "au pair" visas. But the way you wrote makes it seem like it's easy to get a 24 yr old American girl to come take care of you kids. And we should be clear that it's not.

The fact that she's a relative is probably why it was accepted. Is she getting a full working B permit?

Re: Au Pair Salary CHF1,800 and costs of living - possible ?

can anybody actually confirm what the expected wage of a live out au pair with 30 hours a week is?

I know there are some people who say its 1800 per month, but is there some kind of official helpful link someone can post, or a least can we get a consensus rather than just one opinion?

I think that's live IN. Live out you are talking from 25-35CHF and hour assuming you'll be alone with the child and not acting as a "mother's helper".

Dear Cess - I see you are Irish, the point is you need to convince the authorities that you have enough funds to live in Switzerland, tax, health insurance and rent cost here. What residence permit do you have?

Probably 18-22 per hour. You can't get much less than that per hour or you'll be at a level where you can ask for social benefits which the gov't will frown upon.

So different in the UK where the majority of workers get benefits!
