Re: Basler Fasnacht: Time to escape or time to enjoy..

Fasnacht used to be the one time Catholics and Protestants could act naughty and be forgiven for their "misbehaviour". It's a heathen fest allowed in formerly very religious country. Many relationships began at Fasnacht and many children were conceived during this time too.

Re: Basler Fasnacht: Time to escape or time to enjoy..

Went to Liestal yesterday for the fire parade (Chienbase) and then this morning in Basel by 4am for Morgestraich. Then went out again for the parades at 2pm.

I love it all.

I've done Liestal twice now and probably wouldn't go again unless I had friends over. Ditto Morgestraich, but the daytime parades are always worth a look.

Re: Fasnacht is fascinating, but I have questions

Is Fasnacht beginning this weekend with the lantern parade, do I have my timetable right? If so, what is the exact Swiss time it begins? I can do the figuring and translate it to my time.

Last year, there was a website that provided 24 hr webcams around Basel where I could watch the events, see the crowds, and hear the bands, etc. I was enthralled. (I had it on while I was at work and checked in every now and then.) I even enjoyed watching the crews clear up the mountains of confetti each night, leaving the streets immaculate to begin the next day's revelries all over again.

Sadly, I cannot find my website link to the webcams. One was right on the square outside the cathedral, a couple were on two different side streets, one was overlooking an eatery. It was all fun viewing.

Does anyone know links to live webcams that stream this event?
Hi, i have the link to the website you want to watch Fasnacht its fasnacht.ch, happy watching :-)

Re: Basler Fasnacht: Time to escape or time to enjoy..

Somewhat off-topic: Anyone knows where can I get a large format Basel Fasnacht plakette?

I've been to a restaurant there and saw that they had a collection of plakettes that were about 6in x 6in in size. While I can find places that sell the regular pins online I couldn't find one that sells these bigger ones.

Thank you for your help and time

Re: Basler Fasnacht: Time to escape or time to enjoy..

Do not quote me on it, but i remember asking my hubby that same question, he being Swiss but not a great fasnacht aficionado was not sure, but believes it is reserved for members of the comitte. Either way, asking the comitte direct might be the way to get an answer, do they have a contact email?
