Well I don't want to just want to tell them to be quiet. I also would want to avoid being the character from Billy Madison then gets paper bags of burning poop left on his front porch when I ride with them each day.

I had to endure the overtly loud banal conversation of a bunch of Gestaltung hoch schule girls from USA and US/UK wannabe's, in general they believe you can't understand them because your 'Swiss' (I blend in), so they seem to just shout out there intimate details to each other, blissfully unaware of the generally high level of education here.
Oh, god, tell me about it. Loud talking doesn't bother me, but I'm more shocked at the lack of discretion in public conversations sometimes from Int School kids. Maybe the fact that they don't live permanently in the country makes them think there are no repercussions to public knowledge of intimate details of their lives.

I remember sitting in a bus next to a bunch of Int School girls and thinking, "Well, I wasn't expecting to find out today that this girl lost her virginity to her sailing prof when she was 14, but I just did."

fyi, "gringo" is not a racial slur at all,
Honky and Cracker are more effective. But if you're Mexican, then you're more likely to use "guerro".

My wife is fluent in Russian but I've long forgotten mine. THere have been times, when in Russia, Ukraine, or even the Vatican when she's said 'It's a good thing you don't know Russian anymore'....referring to conversations being held nearby.

fyi, "gringo" is not a racial slur at all, it simply denotes a "foreigner" (which I am). as for the rest - rather than assume that they were simply Americans (which the percentages say they probably are not), or that the national pastime back home is being loud and rude (it certainly is not in my home and was not in my parents' home), I would have simply asked the kids to tone it down. there's really nothing more annoying than loud and disrespectful kids, save maybe for Americans living abroad who spend an inordinate amount of time denigrating their native home.
Well maybe it's not what you meant, but it's how I took it. Gringo isn't like the OK way to insult people. And again maybe it's not the way you were. Yeah you say Gringo isn't a racial slur, but a way to denote a foreigner, but I almost always hear it exclusively used by Mexicans living in the US, and do you see the conundrum?
If you want to call me an American, I have an easy solution for you, call me an American. I hadn't thought of a nick name for you, and until we have a beer together, I wouldn't think you would have one for me.

All that being said, percentages, based on who has responded or true facts? As far as people bashing the states, that's another issue. I am proud to be an American and love being here, while I am here.
But that has nothing to do with this thread.

I would just ask them politely to keep it down. Most kids will listen ,dont feel bad about it. Just do it. If they dont listen then , i feel sorry for them and their parents.

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

Now you're talking MY language, literally & figuratively.

I deal with the teenage beast on a daily basis--until May--and I can tell you they are all different. But most respond to "real" communication.

Disapproving just because they are not following the rules....probably not going to get you any kind of positive response. They are at the time of their lives for rule-breaking and stretching limits. I know. This is soooo anti-Swiss! Deport them!!!

Why do you want them quieter? Is it because they are the only ones being noisy? (That's probably why they are, btw!) Is it because you are extra tired from hard and stressful day? Is it because you need to concentrate on your ride to work about some presentation you're imminently giving? Is it because you haven't had your 4th cup of kaffee and you're irritable?

I'd try the ol' respectful, sincere, and un-harrassed approach. A request for them to tone it down a bit. Supply a brief explanation why--if desired. That leaves them with options to consider. They still have a choice, they still have "power" in the situation.

Many teens have not yet figured out that rules are not about power. Rules and guidelines (or even just expectations of a quiet peaceful train ride) are how a group, a community, function and move forward together.

So if it is a power struggle, they will probably not ever concede. But given a choice to be reasonable....maybe some luck.

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

I have a good friend from Marseille, in his 60's, chest like a wine barrel, the sort of fellow who can hold is own in a fight with Foreign Legion guys. He's all about politeness and respect.

He was on the train one day when a late teen-very early 20s bloke was hollering on his phone. Asked him to keep it down. Bloke said to piss off. Friend walked over, took the phone, opened the window (it was a Regional), and tossed it out. Bloke was speechless- mission accomplished. Tried to tell the cops at the station but Marseille guy charmed them into not believing the kid. I love that guy.

And with that, I'm off to 4chan for some normalcy. (not 'cause of this thread, this is pretty normal)

Help! I don't know where "Gwinner" is either. I *am* American. But I'm an OLD one. Maybe it's generational?

Please tell.

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

I tend to handle these situations by making excessive noise in their ear hole back.

So if you have ever seen the weirdo shouting randomly until volume decreases as a whole, or pulling his phone out and shouting a fake conversation as loud as they can, so the whole tram/bus can hear, normally discussing how god damn amazing my life must be and how important I am, until the other prick puts their phone down, then you have probably met/seen/heard me.

No presentation, and I almost never drink coffee in the morning. As I am going some where at 8am they definitely are not done with a long day, Unless of course they are working in sweatshops from the wee hours to support their 20,000 CHF per year high school eduction. Then yeah, let them holler.
I don't know about all this empowering stuff, but I appreciate your response. It's more like, wither it is the morning, or the evening, we don't really need to re-enforce the stereo type do we? And also, it's 8AM!!!!! It sounds like a rock concert from english speaking American accenters. And they are almost the only ones. It's that what I mean.

I don't know what you would do, but tomorrow morning I don't know if I can take it anymore. It's like they are intentionally pitched their voices as loud as they can. I mean, I know. It's almost necessary to have your headphones on, blasting music at the same time you hold a conversation. And of course one has to talk loud enough to hear one's self.

However....
American adults are far louder than hyper kids and usually make a great deal less sense.

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

This weekend I spend a good 7 odd hours on different trains dealing with old drunk people acting like kids. The Gugga Musik bands---and they were acting in a fashion that people their age and appearance generally bitch about when adolescents carry on that way. Generally speaking.

To be honest, it irritated the hell out of me, but just as much as the teens do. I wouldn't dare say anything though, thems the breaks of using public transit. If I really had an issue, I would a cab.
