Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

I don't know what you would do, but tomorrow morning I don't know if I can take it anymore. It's like they are intentionally pitched their voices as loud as they can. I mean, I know. It's almost necessary to have your headphones on, blasting music at the same time you hold a conversation. And of course one has to talk loud enough to hear one's self.

However....

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

How do you know they're American?

I've spent time in the presence of a couple of teenagers here who are NOT from "The Americas" at all, but yet have "American" accents (West-Coast US / Canadian type) due to attending one of the many International schools.

Kids are loud. If they are too loud, ask them nicely to tone it down some.

You are a cryptic poster, Confloozed.

How old are these kids? Are they in every train car? Every day? Weird!

If this is the new Samuel L. Jackson film I'm going to give it a miss.

Since the formal downgrading of their society away from the monarchy in 1794 (I'm not knocking it - we scots still haven't managed it ), I believe there's been an active campaign to breed out any form of volume control.

Very true, International School does that. I'm Russian with an American accent, but I lived there. My girlfriend's mom went to the International School and has one, despite having no Americans in her family and only ever being in the US as a tourist.

So to answer your question: they may be Russian, be careful!

My train is in the path of 2 International Schools. If by the fact they are still wearing their varsity jackets, and have had enough conversations over the past 4 years for me to know that of the english I hear on that train is 80% probably American english, then yeah, they are Americans.

I haven't been on that train daily for 4 years, but when I am in spurts, there they are.

I don't mind the goo goo gaa gaa talk of kids. But it is so damn loud. I felt like saying something today, but then I retracted for a few stops, and thought about fellow EFers calling me a wimp for not manning up and just telling them something, then 2 swiss women got on the train, in their plus 50's and trumped them being far more loud.

However, those two Swiss won't be there tomorrow.
I really don't want to (too) rude, or rude at all. But I would like to tell them something, and perhaps maybe, I could drop into the same Swiss stoic morning commute as everyone else.

Hopefully their parents will have read your message and have a word with them before tomorrow

Or you will blow your top, and we will read all about it here soon. How this dreadful Swiss person dared ask their little angels to pipe it down a bit- you mean horrible person

the fact that you posted your complaint on the internet instead of simply confronting them immediately is the perfect passive-aggressive response...

...for a gringo. you must be from the States, huh?

try a simple test - sternly tell them "heb d schnoore". if it works, then at least you will have confirmed that they aren't Americans.

I would just let it wash over me, smug in the knowledge that I don't have an American accent, so won't be tarred with the particular brush.

fyi, if you aggregate all of the International Schools in the Zurich area, the student population is less than 25% American. this is particularly true at the upper schools (the kids who would typically ride the train), since the typical US expat is sent over here at an age where their kids are younger and we gringos try to have our kids finish up high school in the States if we can.

also fyi, all instruction at the Int'l Schools (except for language instruction) is in English, so any kid who attends the schools for more than a year or so will generally speak flawless English. and, with the exception of the kids from Australia or the UK, almost all of them do so with an "American" accent.

I was rather copying another thread, and just trying to cop hits from the confusion.

Also, I think as an American, not a gringo, as I am not above being hit with racial stereotypes, but also don't know why you need to go past calling me an American or a "Confloozed", I felt it might be arrogant and overly disrespectful to go after kids expressing our favorite national pastime, being loud AsF. Now that's fine in the states, but not here. And so I was looking for what people would do in approaching them, less catching a racial slur, and hearing how passive aggressive I am.

I find that staring and grimmacing works. If they still don't pipe it down you could flick boogers at them.

but if you really want to get hands on... take away their headphones and tell them to learn some manners.

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

I had to endure the overtly loud banal conversation of a bunch of Gestaltung hoch schule girls from USA and US/UK wannabe's, in general they believe you can't understand them because you're 'Swiss' (I blend in), so they seem to just shout out their intimate details to each other, blissfully unaware of the generally high level of education here.

Re: Loud American Kids on Train...what would you do?

Most kids, American or not, are accustomed to being told to be quiet by adults. They will probably respond by being quieter.

fyi, "gringo" is not a racial slur at all, it simply denotes a "foreigner" (which I am). as for the rest - rather than assume that they were simply Americans (which the percentages say they probably are not), or that the national pastime back home is being loud and rude (it certainly is not in my home and was not in my parents' home), I would have simply asked the kids to tone it down. there's really nothing more annoying than loud and disrespectful kids, save maybe for Americans living abroad who spend an inordinate amount of time denigrating their native home.

Well I don't want to just want to tell them to be quiet. I also would want to avoid being the character from Billy Madison then gets paper bags of burning poop left on his front porch when I ride with them each day.
