Re: Jehovah's Witnesses looking for English names on doors?

Would you guys mind using another acronym for the Jehovah's Witnesses?

JW has other connotations.

Yes and I am sorry, excuse me. I have fixed my post now!

@ gbn
I am not anti-religion or whatever. I have found my own way that is suitable for me and leave all the rest to their own. Everyone shall believe what they want, if it makes THEM happy...I am happy for them too, as long as they leave me to believe my own stuff get it?

I too am a firm believer in laissez faire

But the examples you gave (and many others we read about) are cases of religion interfering (or trying to) with other people's lives based.

Like SVP leaflets in the letterbox, door-to-door evangelists are a sign of a healthy and open society. I welcome them, even if I'm not interested in what they have to say.

A polite "no thank you" should suffice.

Dear MWW, perhaps if you were to ask EE, or DB for possible alternate interpretations of JW you might find yourself on a path to enlightenment.

kindest regards

JW

Totally agree with you EE.

My Swiss father grew-up within his wonderful Jehovah Witness family.

In-fact, his brother (my Uncle) still runs the whole Jehovah Witness thing here in Switzerland - I believe that it has about 20'000 members (having just looked it up on Google).

Might have balanced things that my mother grew-up within a Jewish family.

Personally, I grew-up in England with the most wonderful father possible. I enjoyed since a small child the discussions we had concerning God or Darwin etc., as well as his loving, caring and loyalty to his family - despite a mother who was severely ill over many years. He kept his belief to himself, and never pressurised me.

Then rejected his belief totally - I was already long since away from home - when the local English Jehovah Witness group (long-story - she should have instead joined the local bingo club when looking for company), rejected my mother after a while because of her illness.

As a child, I carried the flag at the local Church of England harvest festival, got baptised during a school vacation at a local youth meet-up, and yes, there were the constant overheard marital arguments of whether my Dad would allow a blood-transfusion, or the lack of sex my mother had (sex is only there for procreation apparently). Her comments on his countrys earlier involvement in the persecution of her family were also pretty harsh.

Later fell in-love for a short-time with a Jewish guy, and attended a couple of celebrations with his family, as a guest. Also spent a few years with a Swiss Catholic, who irritated me the most when putting some kind of 'holy' bread in the back of a kitchen cupboard for months after a Christmas mass.

But - can tell you - when my Swiss father died, and later my mother - my "Jehovah Witness" uncle and his wife were the only ones there for me. I haven't had contact with them in years, but that was just because I was going through dreadful problems with my Swiss Protestant ex-husband. Both my Church of England and US Christian siblings were a bit more interested in fighting over a potential inheritance at that time.

Me? I'm agnostic, and have been since childhood. Only atheist when the human rights of followers are degraded, abused or exploited.

So to cut a long story short - if I'm interested then I'll listen to what people want to say. If I'm not, then I won't - simple really.

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses looking for English names on doors?

It's funny how one's views change with age, maturity and a bit of thought.

Back before my conversion, a long time ago, I lived in a shared house with a bunch of lads. When the Jehovah's Witnesses knocked on the door, we would invite them in with glee, then proceed to deconstruct their arguments one by one.

We each had our own role: I was the historian, another was the ruthlessly logical philosopher, another was the "wise fool". We were always polite, but relentless as a T-1000. After an hour or so, they'd ask to leave, but we always parted on good terms.

We noticed, though, that on each visit (we had several in the space of a few weeks), there was a new team, each better at countering our arguments than the one before. Finally, on the last visit, one chap they sent round really knew his onions, and gave as good a verbal fight as we could imagine anyone could give. It ended in a draw, but with smiles all round and compliments to our "tag team". As they left, they asked if they could leave us some literature, which we graciously accepted.

It wasn't until after they left that we noticed that the chap on the back cover was the one who'd given us such a good response. Apparently he was somebody of some relevance in the local chapter.

We were quite flattered. They never came round again.

These days, now I have my own beliefs, I have a bit more respect for them and wouldn't presume to waste their time. But we enjoyed it at the time, and it seemed that they did too!

Good people are good people, whatever they believe. They just wanted to share, that's all.
