Yes.

You can carry a gun, too.

Anyway, maybe it was jammed and he couldn't close it, so he HAD to carry it open!

Tom
You cannot carry a gun, you would need a special permit for that.

I don't understand why some of you are giving the OP $hit for voicing his concern. Carrying an open knife on public transportation is certainly alarming and the police should have taken this incident serious. But hey, at least the crime statistics are being kept low...
Sorry, what "incident" ?

The OP followed the person up to his lodgings, without any incident happening

Do you want to tell me that a
- London Bobby
- Dublin Gardia man
- Paris Gendarme
- policechap or Carabinieri in Italy
would have taken such a report seriously ?

What absolute nonsense. The police here are about as useless as tits on a bull and this has been shown in the endless reports of prisoners escaping, ample armed robberies where they couldn't find the robbers and the plethora of violent crimes which could have been prevented. Somebody running around with a knife is something to be taken serious and is not to be dealt with "careful nonchalance" as you've put it.
Given that the guy did nothing illegal, and is now in his own home where he can wave around as many knives as he likes, what do you expect the police to do by way of taking it seriously? Send a patrol car to drive by the house and have a look, perhaps - which is apparently exactly what they did.

So I can't fault their actual handling of the matter. All that's left is a question of communication - how do you best reassure the caller, how much do you inform? There are arguments to be had on both sides here: too little information might escalate things but then again so can too much.

In any case the strategy I've just described (give away as little information as possible, never commit to any response before it happens) is the standard approach of Zürich police, whether you approve of it or not. Seeing this for what it is, a deliberate communications strategy, lets you look past it to their actual response to the 'threat', which I think in this case was impeccable.

Holy cow. I would have expected the cops to DO something, too. I think you did the right thing by calling them. The fact you are taking flak from people here is pretty dumb - we all live here and should be respecting each others safety, I would certainly call a thug wandering around with an open knife ( sorry, ahem, rescue knife - who was he rescuing exactly? ) a very worrying site. Sure, the police are useless, but this country lives in a total vacuum to the rest of the world, but it shouldn't stop civilised people from expecting the authorities to do something when they see it or report it. Good for you.

i'm sure your statistics are very interesting, but is a neo nazi with an open knife in public not a danger?

Re: Rape jokes are not funny - nor are knife wielding neo-nazis

i would be very scared as well and i find it a bit strange that walking around with a knife in sight is ok

BUT

why do you all refer to him as a neo nazi with such certainty? the black clothes and the doc martins only? did he say anything that it would make you believe he is one? did he had a symbol in his clothes or a tattoo? my boyfriend wears black and doc martins and he certainly is not one (ok doesn't have a shaven head).

Re: Rape jokes are not funny - nor are knife wielding neo-nazis

so, if he was wearing a crucifix while carrying a knife, would that make it better? I don't see the difference. The guy was seen by a concerned citizen, who was worried about it enough to move away and post it up here - who cares what his political views are - i can be killed just as effectively by a knife whoever carries it. I said neo nazi because thats what what the guy said who saw it. I agree that what we wear is not necessarily indicative of .. threat to harm .. Personally, I have had a shaved head as well, but carrying an open knife in public ... yeah, right - maybe he's a fisherman.

People carry guns all the time on trains, mopeds, etc., and they do not need permits.

Of course, they are supposed to be unloaded.

this thread confuses me, regardless of his political affiliation a dude carrying an open knife on a public train or tram would concern me, as well. unless, of course, he was busying himself cleaning fish.

Re: Rape jokes are not funny - nor are knife wielding neo-nazis

All this kinda makes me want to board a local train carrying my victorinox/fibrox badass chef's knife in my regular DMs, black jeans and parka whilst talking to myself to see if I'd get busted. I'm guessing I would since I am a strange attractor, though I don't suppose I'd get off by saying I was doing research....

This somewhat reminds me of a story where a random guy on the Helsinki Metro was carrying an axe and nobody said anything until he lodged it in a random passenger's cranium who died, unfortunately, not instantly ( http://www.hs.fi/english/article/1076152535020 ) . Sure, it's not illegal to carry an axe.....
I figure if you're on public transport and brandishing a weapon in full view, you're probably best regarded as a danger if not completely bonkers and, after 12am on a Friday night, hell yah.

And, Wolli, I'm waiting for a tale from the Boer War...

Has anyone on the EF CSI team considered the option that our supposed Neo-nazi Edward Scissorhands may have just been a fashion unconscious relic of the 1980s with a Leatherman?

Most baldies with jackboots wouldn't be caught dead with such a nerd-specific tool like a leatherman. Hheeehee...I said tool.

While I normally carry both a Swiss army knife (mainly for the corkscrew), and a Leatherman (it has no corkscrew), I don't normally carry them open.

But I often carry a chef's knife with an 8" blade on trains!

(and a cutting board, and some sausages and smelly cheeses)

But do you stand near the doors fondling it? I figure someone cutting up food might get a scowl or two (hey, I've had an old bat bitch me out for eating a pretzel on the train...strange attractor), I doubt it you'd get on the radar of weird unless you were on a train, late at night, not cutting food and fondling your chef's knife in plain view. Hey, we're human, and we kinda know when folks are a bit off....
