House key is missing

Hello,
I lost my door key (I have 3 identical keys I lost one of them) for my flat . Do you know how much roughly the agency will charge me for this?
The key model is KESO 1000((lots of circular dents instead of teeth). This key is used to open the main building door and my flat main door.
Is it required to change the lock for all the flats in this block...
Thanks!

Re: House key is missing

A search of these forums would show you that somewhere in the range of CHF300-500 is the going rate...

Ouch!
The previous tenant of our place lost a key (main door of building and apartment door). We've been in here three weeks now and no locks have been changed

Re: House key is missing

I guess you dont have a key-finder on it? (a metal plaque that is registered with your address on and saves lots of hassles when the key gets lost.)

Maybe you will have luck and it will be found then and sent back to you. If you have an idea whereabouts you might have lost it, then first try a lost and found place before going and getting everyone a new set of keys.

Good hunting with the easter bunny!!

Re: House key is missing

There was recently a statement on EF, that if you lost the key a long way from home, your insurance would pay some of the costs.

Re: House key is missing

My LL told me the keys cost 450 each. Losing one would require changing the front door together will all keys issued - approx 60 keys in total.

You do the math!

How did you find out the previous tenant lost a key? Did the property manager/owner inform you of this at your lease start inspection? If so, then you should have insisted the cylinder to your apartment was changed and you are supplied with new keys.

This is your right. Also, if you do not know the whereabouts of a key, your insurance may not cover you in the event of a break in with no sign of forced entry.

I have bought two such keys, which cost only a tenth of that.

Check your insurance as it may cover any costs if something needs replacing.

The previous tenant was at the handover and the agent asked him to find the key or the locks would have to be changed.
We will get on to the agent to see what is happening. Thanks Mrs D.

Re: House key is missing

I was quite lucky.
I let a friend stay at my place for a couple of weeks in 2005 while she was in between jobs. When she left, she cleaned and tidied my whole apartment as a thank you.
However I never found her spare set of keys again.
I didn't report them a lost as I thought I'd find them if I really needed to. Five years later my Landlord notified all householders that they intended to demolish and redevelop the building. When I left there was an amnesty and I didn't get charged for the lost set of keys. If I'd notified the landlord, I'd have been out of pocket.

Don't forget to check with the lost and found office (link to Zurich one above, but there is one in most cities). People are extremely honest in Switzerland (god bless them) and I'd be surprised if it isn't handed in. I lost a bunch of keys, and they were handed in within a week.

Re: House key is missing

Rumour has it that you can go to a third world country, such as France, and get these keys cut there without needing the correct proof and/or certificate.

Whether the landlord will notice when you return a dodgy foreign copy is another matter.
