Moving to Zurich from UK

Hi all,

My first post on here and i was hoping that a few people could kindly offer me a little advice.

I am a 30 year old English guy currently living in London, just been offered a great job which means I would have to move to my companies head office in Zurich. The role would be a tremendous opportunity and financially I would be much better off than I am in London.

My problem is I am a single guy and do not know anyone in Switzerland, i am keen on the job but fear i will feel a fair bit of isolation and loneliness if i move.

Has anyone else had this issue? Whats the social scene like? Is it easy to meet people? Dating etc?

I am a fairly outgoing guy and confident but just have a niggling concern that I am making the wrong decision. (non-german speaker)

Thanks in advance

Well, to take your considerations one by one

A) you should NOT over-value the financial aspects as things in Zurich ARE expensive
B) However while Zürcher in particular and Swiss in general are "renowned" to be a bit on the reserved side, you not only will find a large "English" community but lots of "natives" ready to welcome you
C) Social scene ? Clearly not to be compared with London. Realize that Zurich size-wise is comparable with Bristol, Newcastle, Bournemouth etc
D) Where is Zürich ? THIS is the point about our place ! IT is just 4 hours by public transport or car away from Milano and the rest of Northern Italy. It is half an hour away from Germany and just 3 hours (railways+roads) away from München and just 2 hours away from Stuttgart and less than 7 hours from Paris
D-2--- within 90 minutes you are in French speaking places and within Italian speaking places places
E) BUT to learn "Continental" languages rather is the command of the day

Re: Moving to Zurich from UK

Welcome to Zurich, I'm a young expat from the UK too only been here 4 days and to be honest I'm surprised at how friendly everyone is. It is quite shocking, about 80% of people that I've come across are friendly and randomly smile and greet me.

I can't comment on the social side of things but overall I'm impressed :-D.

To work out if your much better off in CH use an exchange 2.10 CHF to 1 GBP, thats about the reality. It's not that long ago the rate was 2.60 & London was very expensive, now it's cheap as chips.

Re: Moving to Zurich from UK

Your worries are understood , however it depends more on the one's effort how much he/she has the will to integrate and not to get isolated.

Zurich is a bit tough, but it is having a lot of forigners from different nationalities - it will also depend in which area you will live and how many colleagues you have from London working in the headoffice in Zurich.

As said above, note that in 2012, Zurich was rated as the most expensive city in the world

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/...at-way/253149/

There is a website that can help you to make a comparison http://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living

And there is a website that can help you getting info about different type of insurance and taxes in Switzerland www.comparis.ch

This also can help you to find appartment rent prices www.homegate.ch

Back to the point if you will feel lonely and isolated, possibly the number of answers you will get to your questions from English EF will show you how many British/English live here then it will be your effort to know as much as you can in the area around where you will live, but it would be great also to know other cultures and try to integrate by learning some of the local language.

Good luck with your move.

Re: Moving to Zurich from UK

Its not going to be London (or even Newcastle). Its a lot lot quieter but most people speak English, there are a lot of expats and expat groups.

If you're looking to party like a rockstar every night (like we did in London) you will not enjoy. If you are happy with a slightly quieter existence then you will be fine.

There are restaurants, bars, English football, outdoor sports (hiking, skiing etc) and as someone else pointed out you are so close to other European cities.

And again to be repetitive. Take a close look at the cost of living. It is very expensive here BUT you will pay less in tax and take home more.

Overall Switzerland is a pretty great place.

Good luck.

out of your post I conclude that YOU are a friendly person rather with a smile up, and so will have people being friendly and smiling in return

London in comparison with Zürich was expensive in 1972, cheap later on and then rather expensive etc etc

It depends on the area where you live, and more so on where you go shopping

Re: Moving to Zurich from UK

There are "communities"on the internet to meet people like Glocals http://www.glocals.com/zurich/ where they organise parties, sports, etc... quite interesting! Las summer had free in line skating due to Glocals and good chance to meet people!
Another option is Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/cities/ch/z%FCrich/

In a side note, I had moved from London to Zug and when I got the salary offer I thought I would be very well off, but arriving here showed a different reality. Make no mistake, Switzerland is an expensive place.

Cheers

Re: Moving to Zurich from UK

Having lived in both places I can tell that London is a much sociable place in general than Zürich. In Zurich it will be easy to meet other expacts, but it will more difficult to meet locals.

Going out here will also be considerably more expensive...good luck!

to meet locals is very easy if you speak the local dialect or/and if you were in the same schoolhouse back in the 1960ies or if you can say that your older brother was at school in this and that schoolhouse very close nearby or if their dog likes you
