Was dragged here as what's now known as a 'trailing spouse' in 1980; lulled into a false sense of security by the promise it was only for a maximum of five years. Which was fine as my son would have been ready for infants school by the time we went home.
Thirty two years later we're still here and my son's a parent himself!

Haha this sounds familiar. Although we just moved here last summer (my OH is Swiss), he promised it would be for a maximum of two years...already that has extended to five. Something tells me that won't be the last extension...

How do you feel about it though? Would you prefer to go back 'home' (wherever that is) - or stay? Or mixed feelings.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I love the wording of this - were you sent, by some higher power perhaps.
My husband got a transfer offer, which he was mildly enthusiastic about at the time mainly because we had a good life together in Poland. I, on the other hand, felt that if "someone" has decided to send us to Switzerland we absolutely must go. I felt drawn by this place and did not listen to any reasonable arguments from my husband, who had spent a year here a few years ago.
From my sickeningly sweet posts you can deduce that I love it here.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I came here with my partner who had a job offer out here. We had a number of options, one of which was to stay in London and the other 2-3 locations were also very attractive. We both chose Zurich, as despite it not being hot 365 days a year and not being next to the ocean, it seemed a very attractive place to live. And indeed it is.

Almost 5 years later, with lots of ups and downs, most of which would have also happened in the UK, I still love it here. Not sure about my ex though

Some days are better than others, but all in all I'm glad I moved. Life is no good if I'm just sitting still.

Not that it's been easy, but I don't think moving to a foreign country is ever easy. The other day a guy walking past me on the escalator spit in my face right before he pushed me over for apparently being in his way...on days like that I miss home (Chicago/Boston)...not that things like that don't happen there (they definitely do!)...just that I have more of a support system of friends there...BUT I've only been here ten months and know it takes time to get good friends like I have back home.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I got here by choice. I had a great life back home, great job and good friends. Suddenly the opportunity came to work in Switzerland. I didnt speak the language and i didnt know anyone. I got a one year unpaid leave from my job just to give it a try. Best decision i ever made although i still miss my family a lot.My mom told me recently that her friends couldnt believe i actually was that brave. But to be honest if i didnt have my familys support i wouldnt come here.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

My wife and I chose to come here. We had job offers from Russia, China, Germany and Japan. We have been here several times and were so excited to accept the offer. Best decision of our lives......even if I can't buy a sandwich at lunch

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

By choice, though I'd argue that's the case for everyone. If you didn't want to come and were sent, you had the option to quit...

I came out by invitation to do my MBA in 2006. Decided I liked it (despite never having been abroad before, and not knowing that they didn't speak "Swiss" until I read the guidebook on the airplane!), and so I stuck around. Get my C permit in a month and have no desire to ever leave!

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I was working as a freelance translator in France; one of my customers needed somebody on site in Neuchâtel for six weeks. The initial six weeks were followed by a six-month contract, then it was suggested that I might want to apply for the job permanently. That was in 1998.

So a bit by accident really - I knew nothing about Switzerland apart from one skiing holiday in the early 1980s, and at the outset there was never any intention of staying here long-term. I very quickly realised that I like it a lot here though, and now I can't see myself leaving unless forced.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

OH was sent here... well, not here exactly...

OH was asked to go to London back in the bad old pre-PETS days when the 6 month mandatory quarantine still existed. No way would I allow my mutts to be stuck isolated in a cold concrete box for 6 months, so OH said no.

Company came back, begging him to reconsider, saying anywhere in Europe would do. So I wrote off to the embassies in most European countries, asking about the import rules for canine critters. By chance, Switzerland replied first...

Yep, the only reason we are here is because of the dogs.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

We were on our way to italy when we stopped in Geneva to spend a week with friends in Geneva. By the end of that week OH had a job and we had a temp apt for three months so we decided to stay. That was in 2000. Still haven't made it to Italy!

Haha, my hometown is Slough, Berkshire and I do not even like going back there to see my mum! I loved Paris where I was before, and would like to visit more, but if I were to go back, I doubt things would be the 'same'.

So I'm happy here. Actually I'm more than happy here, the decision to come here was a good one. As to whether I'll have itchy feet in 3-5 years' time, well that's another question...

I was not sent here. I was pushed. The midwife said to my Mom, "Push, push!" And there I was.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Interesting topic to think...

For me, when I accepted this job (for the same company), almost a year ago, it was to move from Copenhagen to Beijing...about two weeks later, was informed that the whole unit will be relocated to Zurich...so here I am now !! Not sure if it was my choice or was I sent.. but no regret so far !

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I came by choice, but more for external reasons (to support my partner) than for internal reasons. I think this has dramatically coloured my time here and has been part of my struggle.

How I feel about it changes regularly, though I did go through an angry phase where I felt rejected by Switzerland, and rejected it back in my heart - which doesn't help obviously in terms of integrating.

I think as others have mentioned in other posts, it also matters what you were coming from. I love my home country and I don't think that life is necessarily better here (nor worse, just different) - whereas I think for some people who move here it is a major upgrade. In some ways for me it is a downgrade because of the barriers for me in terms of employment, which makes it hard for me to fall in love with the country - despite all its charms.

The collies, alas, are now playing fetch over the Rainbow. The current crew are a gaggle of camera-shy shelties.

Every move we've made/not made is influenced, if not dictated, by the mutts.
