Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

The wife and I needed to live together another 4 months in order for her to apply for an Australian temp visa.

We thought we would head over to NZ for 6 months then as a joke I suggested that we head to CH instead.

She mentioned it to her ex boss at the time just in passing conversation and he was all for it. 'No problem, I'll throw him some work'. So we thought, 'what the heck'.

I committed to just 6 months......

Last December 29th was 4 years and I'm now in the middle of a Weiterbildung, so at least another 2 years of smelling the cheese. Funny how the place just grows on you.....

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I left the UK nearly 4 years ago. Went to Spain, no work there, got a job near Nantes in the west of France, but the company went bust after 6 months. Suddenly I found myself with a choice of returning to the UK (which I didn't want) or look elsewhere, so I fired a load of CV's to companies on the border with France and I got two offers, and took the one in Basel.

Been here just over two years. Prefer to live near the sea, but I love that I have a choice of 3 countries, a good and reasonably secure job, decent money, my daughter is fluent in French now and just about to start with the German, bought a house and bicycle and that's me. Not going anywhere for the time being.

I suppose a better question would be:

"who came here working for the same employer as before they moved here?"

Tom
I came to Zurich last summer to help out our regional office. When I landed back at JFK I had a relocation offer which included a promotion. I've only been here a month but love everything so far but the apartment search process!

That's a good thread, Odile..It's interesting to think about that.

soak up the Swiss goodness, there is a lot to soak up.
I am hoping to join your ranks in the near future. I may be coming as just a visitor for a couple of months, but I am currently job hunting. If I got a job, I could afford to stay and soak up the Swiss-ness of the place.

You, in the forum, have made me feel confident to do so. I know that no matter what question I have, I can search and find strands that have covered it from all angles and I can use the benefit of your experiences to make my adventure as advantageous and exciting as possible.

TY.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I didn't jump, nor was I pushed, I was tugged here gently by the heart strings.
Hubby was told about the job in 1999 by a friend who already lived here, had an interview, was offered the job and that was that.
I stayed behind in the UK where I was working full time and have (very) close family. I visited hubby once a month, he visited me once a month, which was a mixture of real highs and lows. Eventually I took a three month career break then in 2006 a six month one. That was the decider, I handed in my notice, we luckily paid off the mortgage on our house and rented it out, and I moved here!
It was difficult at first, I missed my family and my independence, but I love this country and am so glad things worked out as they did.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

It was our choice. We are here for 1 year and we like it here, but the same time will not hesitate to go back in October when my wife's contract is over. We love hiking and nature, but other than that it seems the country is very conservative, traditional and slightly boring. Of course, money is good, but as we both do not care neither about career, nor accumulating wealth, we prefer far less paid, but more exciting and unpredictable living back home in Eastern Europe.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

My husband was told that his promotional prospects with the company he was working for in Australia were nil.

They didn't want to lose him and so offered a transfer to either Hong Kong or Switzerland. We only had to look at a map to see that Switzerland would let us travel around all the parts of Europe we were longing to see.

He's still working for the same company (though his role has changed) and it looks like we'll be here for a while. There is definite potential for a move at some point in future but we're not fixating on it. If it happens it happens.

There are a lot worse places to be stuck

Great idea...great thread...great stories
Ohhh man...so many things could be said but here is the short version:
we needed a change as a family and Switzerland was the best option for us...at the moment of our choice we had been coming here for about 16 years so many many friends...even though two years ago we were not aware of all the permit obstacles but here we are enjoying another great part of our lives

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

We came here when I was 6 months pregnant with a 1 year old in tow. Nearly moved back 2 weeks later when confronted with all the forms at the unispital all in german and my hormones gave up (unusual for a pregnant woman I know...) - much screaming & tears on the phone to hubby finishing up in London.... "How could you do this to me you ***** - get me the estate agents number now you b****d etc etc," Agreed to stay for 2 years at the very maximum....

Anyway - now been here 6 years and none of us want to move back to the UK

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

No I started my overseas adventure in another country...was supposed to have a permanent job there. I agreed when I got the job to go to Switzerland for 2 years to get some international experience (i was freshly graduated)....

Anyways, 2009 was a bad year for my original company....they rescinded my job, but i managed to stay here...and its grown on me....a bit

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

met this swiss girl in germany 2004, fell in love, we both traveled back n forth Munich-Zurich. as she was about to finish her studies, there was no choice for her to come to Munich and in that time i started to love Zurich, switzerland. though CH was never on my agenda to even go there (bloody expensive!!) my tank was even more fuled after i started snowboarding and noticed that around Zurich i would live in big resort to do that. tadaaaa... sent the cv out and got a job. now its 5 years and 2 jobs later and i think i will try to never leave. best choice ever made.

I met my wife who is a swiss native in Texas. She tried moving to the USA but could not get a green card. In Nov. 2011 my lease was up on my apt and I sold everything I owned and moved over here. So far so good.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Forced - although it was like being given an extended holiday voucher.

We'd already made the decision that my (Swiss) wife had the better potential for career advancement and financial reward, so when our first was born I became the stay-at-home dosser dad.

We were not here then, and in theory had the opportunity for her Swiss employer to send us to any one of many world locations, although we also knew she would also have to do a stint, at some point, back at "head office".

So, she got her marching orders to return here - we'd just survived the Y2K bug.
Within quite a short time, she was able to change department and her contract to become permanently based here, so any future chance of globe-trotting no longer exist - but with 2 children now, the stability isn't a bad thing.

Obviously there are many things that frustrate me here (as with a lot of other places - including England - once the honeymoon period has worn off), but you just learn to accept (begrudgingly) and adapt.

I expect to die here - later rather than sooner.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

We came here 3 years ago and it was our own choice. The wife found a job here and i got one later.
We lead a family life here of a quality we only could dream of in the UK.
(which i miss very little).
If i had to return i would be mortified.
I count myself lucky to have made some great friends here, every thing i want is on the doorstep, pub, skiing etc

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

We came here by choice. OH was presented with the opportunity to work in Switzerland last year (for the same company as stateside), but the timing and job weren't quite right. Fast forward one year and a slightly different opportunity presented itself (still with the same company as stateside) and this time the timing and the job WERE right. I'm a very happy trailing spouse, OH is happily working as a Swiss employee for a company he's been with since the beginning of his career, the kiddos are flourishing, and we're already trying to find a way to extend the contract

As for missing home--I know we Americans get a bad rap for sobbing about no 24 hour supermarkets, lack of powdered cheese Mac and Cheese, not being able to find "the same" brown sugar that we're used to, etc.--and I do miss those things a little. However, I've found that the only thing that I REALLY miss from home is being able to pick up the phone and chat with my mom. Everything else I miss from the States is minor compared to daily chats with her...

Came here nearly 9months ago after being offered a 3 year position here in the Valais by my current employers. Given the state of the UK job market at that time, still not sure it counts as "by choice" or not...

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

This question really makes me think! For the first few months since I relocated here since August last year, I thought I was "forced" here without choice...because the man of my dreams just so happened to live here ("unfortunately" I kept saying), when I wanted to be back on the other side of the world in the US finishing my degree and "living my life"....but today I'm reading this question thinking of course, it was only by choice, and for love

It's so great to read how many people how found a beautiful life here, and even those of us who're still feeling a bit out of place (I guess?) will find that if we do in fact stay. That said, I'm not so sure I want to live here forever, but only because there's so much else I still want to experience in this world. My husband is positive, though, that we will eventually come back. LOL

Same here! I keep in touch with my family and friends via Skype* Even the ones who don't have computers, you can call their landlines. The rates are quite reasonable, too.

That's how I'm able to talk to my mom nearly every day without breaking the bank
