Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Just wondering what the proportion of EF members actually chose to come and live here, and % of those who were 'sent' here?

And perhaps to what extent this impacts on how you feel about your experience in CH.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I came here to work for a Swiss-only company near Zurich, and after four years went to Ticino to work for another Swiss-only company (no multi-nationals for me), where I still am 22 years later.

Don't think many people were getting sent here in the mid '80s!

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

That's a good thread, Odile..It's interesting to think about that.

Well, I was sent. But I have owned the terrain, sort of speak, by now, the experience has become only mine. Tough, but real. The way it has impacted, is, it's not the place, it's what you make of it. Enabled me to succeed here, start loving things here, change things in me and around, soak up the Swiss goodness, there is a lot to soak up.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I chose to come live here... 12years ago this month.... it was an easy decision

mrs. , who wasn't mrs. at the time, had been here for a number of years and I had just been given a very nice golden handshake from the computer company I worked for in Boston ( end of the world which was Y2K anyone? )

You should have enabled the Poll option, maybe re-open the thread as one?

I came here once upon a time for 'only' a 6 month internship (could have picked two places, but I opted for this one), I kinda stuck around there after that

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Came here of my own free will :-)
After trying working at LHR, gave that up as a bad choice, saw a small 2 inch advert in FLight International, worte, applied got the job and been here for the last 14 years or so. Love it here, won't go back :-)
Now if I could only learn German I'd be set. (Work is in english before anyone asks)

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Was dragged here as what's now known as a 'trailing spouse' in 1980; lulled into a false sense of security by the promise it was only for a maximum of five years. Which was fine as my son would have been ready for infants school by the time we went home.
Thirty two years later we're still here and my son's a parent himself!

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Yes a poll could be a good idea, good question too (never got round to answering how I got my job here in another thread).

WRT myself, originally I was trying to get out (from Paris) to Sydney Australia through my company. I said no a few years back, and since then there have been no more opportunities. Was thinkign "where next" after than for a while - Hong Kong and Singapore were potential possibilities - and then I noticed an internal job offer for Zurich. Job looked good, and I liked the idea of speaking German again (little did I realise it's all Zueriduuetsch here!). My partner was not too keen, and after a good old fashioned row I submitted an application the next day!

Long story short (!), I got the job, got a good package (even if I'm under the EF 'poverty line' ) and we are now happy families here. We are _all_ very happy with the decision to come here!

Haha, originally I was only supposed to be in Paris (where I went after gaining my degree) for a max of five years... Took me almost 15 years to get out (and although Zurich is very different after Paris, it's a good choice for this stage of my life).

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

It was choice for me. After living several years together in Australia with my Swiss-miss we decided to try life in Switzerland. So here we are and only 9 months to go before I can apply for the little red book.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Interesting thread, Odile.

I kind of came to Switzerland by chance - I mean, coming was my choice, the specific place just "happened". I really wanted to go to Germany, but my boss told me forget it if you don't speak German. Then she gave me some possible alternative options, and Switzerland sounded like the most challenging and the most different, so I picked it.

I came without doing any homework, and this is something that, on one side, I regret and is entirely my fault, but on the other hand, I came with excitement about a new experience. However, I came with the firm intention of staying only 1 year. Almost 2 years later, as much as I complain, as much as I sometimes find it difficult, I am still here My German improves a bit everyday, and so does my cross-country skiing - not at my desired speed, but I can't complain.

You know, last night I was at a dinner party and understood most of the conversations that were going on, even some odd bits and pieces of Swiss German! It was a wonderful feeling, although I know I am very far from being at the level I want. And this morning, when I woke up, made a coffee, looked out the window and the sun was rising behind the mountains, I felt happy and grateful.

Definitely a choice. A choice my husband and I would make again, based upon our experiences thus far.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

By choice.

Interviewed in London for an international company who were hiring "locally" (i.e. no expenses / relocation costs, no expat deal) here in Basel.

Job sounded interesting, google-mapped Basel to work out where in Switzerland it was, signed contract, arrived one Sunday, started work on Monday. Disaster. Basel in mid January not knowing anyone. Hated it. Two or three weeks later, had an apartment sorted, had friends, started to learn how things ticked, went to Morgestraich/Fasnacht and started to like it.

A couple of months later and was enjoying it. Plan to stay just one year passed. Plan to stay 1.5 years passed. Plan to stay here 2.5 years is the next milestone.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

well, hubby had an offer and we made the choice to accept it. we didn't have to and it was with a swiss organization so we came here in a position of being swiss, not in an expat position.

i'm happy to have come with nothing and work in a position i love as well as having a business of my own going strong. it's doing something i really love that i probably wouldn't have done if i stayed in nyc and it feels great to help others. hubby is always ready to go back to the states (he's french so he loves nyc ) but i'm fine right here in lovely lausanne!

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

Came here of my own free will in 1971, with a 9 month contract in the pocket.
In 1972 I was asked if I would like to stay, with the promise of a C permit in 1973. I said yes and have never looked back.
The sun did'nt shine every day, but almost.

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

By choice. I'm originally from Australia but had been in London for a few years. Married the OH (British) last year, and we both got itchy feet and wanted to try somewhere other than London for a while. I wasn't ready to go back to Aus yet, and we both knew people who had done the whole 'live in Switzerland for a while' thing and really enjoyed it. Also the fact that we could both get jobs here helped sway the decision.

Happily it all worked out and we're very happy with the decision. Like many, we're still in the initial 'give it a try for a year or two and see what happens' phase. From what I hear, people either hate it and go home after 6-12 months, or love it and are still here 10 years later. All I can say is, so far so good

Re: Was coming here your choice- or were you sent?

I was happily living in London with my Swiss boyfriend. After 5 years, he became homesick and couldn't stand the City any more. I had a job I loved, lots of friends and really liked England, so it wasn't an easy decision for me.

I had a very hard time in the beginning, but came to terms with it and now love my life here.

And never regretted having married him, either
