Consignment shops

Has anyone ever sold anything through consignment shops?

I'm looking to start liquidating some things, such as bicycles, suits, vintage books, etc. I've actually not seen any such shops at all in Basel. Maybe I'm just not seeing them?

I'll be curious to know if you've used them and what your experience was like.

Thanks.

Re: Consignment shops

Hi,
Would like to bump this thread as I am curious about anyone's experiences with selling furniture through consignment stores... Have tried ricardo and ebay, but takes loads of time....especially when it comes to setting up delivery, etc.

The Brockihaus are good alternatives to liquidate furniture at a great loss , but wondering if anything of this sort exists in Switzerland???

Well perhaps you could start by explaining what you mean by 'consignment store'. Although one can somewhat infer a meaning from your post, and hazard a guess that they don't exist, you might get more information if you described them.

Re: Consignment shops

"Consignment shop" is an American term for those second-hand shops that sell used goods for owners (consignors), typically at a lower cost than new. Not all second hand stores are consignment shops. In consignment shops, it is usually understood that the consignee (the seller) pays the consignor (the person who owns the item) a portion of the proceeds from the sale. Payment is not made until and unless the item sells.

Basically, a person can turn over their items to sell, to this type of store. Once they are sold, the profits are split.

I've also seen a similar type of business set up, as a mini-mall, with roped off areas sub-rented for mini-stores. In this case all the renters share the costs and responsibilities together. Can be quite clever and fun!
