1) Find a job. Rest is piece of cake after you have contract. Without it, forget it.

Speak or learn French - then you have a better chance of finding a job - the rest is then a piece of cake.

1st you have to rent an apartment, it is very hard. We used to try to get 1 for months... As soon as you get a place to stay with an address hopefully everything will fall in place sooner or later

Re: settling in lausanne

I would have to agree - you first need a job and the rest will be easy. Girls are old enough to go to school so you won't need to arrange garderies - which is a huge benefit.

Regarding setting up your tax, insurances etc...usually employers provide that sort of information.

Good luck

Since your oldest is 10, one thing to consider is schooling: if you come, come quickly as students are channeled /tested towards high school or trade school paths beginning around this age. She will need all the time she can get to learn German and to adjust in general.

I believe because they start teaching German in 4th grade here.
Otherwise there's no need to speak German in Suisse Romande

They speak French in Lausanne. They teach German in schools for older children, but I can't think of anyone I know that actually continues speaking German after school.

Re: settling in lausanne

Nope. Our impression is that in the German-speaking part everyone speak a little English, and some speak French, whilst people in Lausanne generally speak only French.

Re: settling in lausanne

the children begin german in 5th year, but many schools now start in 3rd with basic songs and things like that.

i think many people here know and speak basic german (high german), many also have ties to the swiss german part, though i find people are much more comfortable and happy to use english. although most of the swiss (lausannois)i know do use their german (if limited) at their place of work, etc.

Re: settling in lausanne

Well of course this part of Switzerland is French-speaking, but students are taught German as a foreign language. In order to get admission into high school, they must pass a German test among others in various subjects. So a child arriving here at the age of 11-12 or later, is at a serious disadvantage trying to get ready for high school. Not only would they have to get up to speed with French and all other subjects (in French), but learn German quickly as well.
