Crazy Stupid Question: How do I rent an OOOOLD movie?

So, I'm sitting here on a Thursday night with my two grown children who live in the US who are visiting us and we are having a discussion about movies that they have never seen, i.e. Love Story, Rosemary's Baby, Brian's Song, etc.

Is there any way to rent/download/stream or whatever these movies to my TV here? (And I am talking about in the next 20 minutes or so!)

Download via torrents, or wait for them on ITV.

Tom

P.S. I LOVE "Bringing up Baby", but I have that on VHS!

My kids are saying NEVER USE TORRENTS because it messes up your computer. (I am just streaming this from what they are saying right this very second!)

Reminds me of when my mum was over for Xmas - grabbed some Doris Day and Cary Grant films. Although the highlight was Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn (love that film). All acquired via torrents.

If you are not that computer literate, and/or have Windows I can understand being wary about downloading. But if you have a Linux box or a mac - go for it, and as Tom says, no worries here (more or less) in CH.

haha! I love Bringing up Baby. Whenever it was on at night, it was always a good excuse to plop down on the couch and call it a day.

Indeed, one of the few VHS I went out of my way to buy!

Tom

P.S. My VHS/DVD recorder (from Migros) records NTSC as well as PAL to DVD, including my NTSC of Bringing Up Baby!

Nope, it's NOT legal in CH when you share illicit film copies, which is what you're doing when using a torrent client.

It can be legal, it's called leaching and it's frowned upon by the evil bearded computer pirates. But you can have a nil upload rate with torrents. Plus there are simple scripts such as with programs like peerblock that will block any upload attempt from your computer.

Also, I'm not sure about Switzerland but in Canada our law makes a difference between passive and active uploading. The latter is illegal when dealing with copyrighted material, the former is legal.

Hi all, there is www.hollystar.ch who ships rental dvd, it was previously known as dvdfly, not sure why they changed. I haven't tried myself yet but they seem to have a lot in stock, all the movies you metionned are there.

Otherwise in Geneva there is le cinoche http://www.lecinoche.ch/ they have almost every old movies, perhaps they can recommend a similar rental shop near you.

... looking at hollystar closer they also do VOD, so you don't have to wait an extra day for the dvd to turn up.

Re: Crazy Stupid Question: How do I rent an OOOOLD movie?

Go to Vuze on your computer, it's free. We download all the old movies and new movies. People put them up and they have a rating system as to the quality. We stopped watching cable. It takes about 20-30 minutes to download and then we watch on Apple TV, can do this on a PC also. Almost anything you want is there every obscure stuff that you can't usually find!

Yes, but if you don't upload anything, it's legal.

Complete and utter rubbish. I've been using Torrents for years and never, ever had PC problems because of them.

True, torrenting files on it's own is not illegal, just a means of file transfer. BUT!

The whole line about torrenting being legal or illegal is moot. If the file, as it ends up on your computer, is a copy of something that someone holds the rights for and you have not legally procured the rights to have it, then it is illegal for you to have it on your computer or stored in any way.

If for some reason the police had reason to search your computer and you were found to have movies and could not prove you acquired them legally, then you would be found guilty of breaking the law regardless of how they got there in the first place.

I'm not going to get all moral about it, but if you are going to break the law, do it and be aware of the consequences. Just like speeding - going to break the limit be prepared to pay the fine.

Well no, the Police/state prosecutor would have decide if they wanted to prosecute. Otherwise you have not been found guilty.

Nothing to back this up with, but I've been told that cases were tried in CH but there have never been any convictions. This is why people are saying that is legal (here in CH).

It's entirely legal to have digital copies on your computer in this country that were not acquired through due process as outlined by the publishers? And the publishers allow that? Sounds like there is a disconnect there somehow.

Note, I wasn't saying anything about the legality of torrenting per se. I was talking about the files once they were in a whole piece and accessible on the computer.

Not attacking, I really want to know because it sounds entirely alien for a country so bent on getting things so correct.
