Velomarkt Calendar 2012 - (Second hand bikes for sale)

For anyone looking for a second hand bike during 2012, here is the Velomarkt Calendar for 2012.

It's in German..... but seriously, it's just the dates and location you are interested in, so it's easy to follow:

http://www.pro-velo.ch/de/themen-und...rsen/kalender/

...... Even if you're not in the market for a bike, sometimes it's just fun to see what bikes are on offer.

Happy Bike hunting

Re: Velomarkt Calendar 2012 - (Second hand bikes for sale)

Hmm...been toying with the idea of getting a bike for a while, just something to get around town and maybe a few rides out down the side of the lake.

Trouble is I know absolutely nothing about them. Has anybody got any do/don't style tips for a first-timer at one of these markets?

I guess you also have to buy a helmet / vignette etc as well, right?

No more vignette in Switzerland, as for the helmet it's not law but it is common sense to have one.

A lot of these bikes will be crap that people are trying to get rid of.
If you don't know anything about bikes and would need to use a shop for repairs or a service, you could be spending an extra CHF200 - 300 if you buy a bad one.
Therefore, take someone with you.

That said, if you can get a decent test ride, and it all seems to be working, the brakes are ok, wheels not buckled, all the gears work, no roughness or grinding from the bearings, then it should be ok. YouTube and Google will help here.

You can also buy a second hand bike from a shop, at least you'll know it'll be ok, or buy something from a DIY shop like Jumbo. New bike, all working, for not that much money.

Re: Velomarkt Calendar 2012 - (Second hand bikes for sale)

The Mrs got herself a right nice general purpose bike at the Velobörse in Luzern a few weeks ago for less than CHF 200.- and a helmet at the Brocki for less than CHF 10.-. I agree that a test ride is essential.

At least some of the events sponsored by a local Pro Velo chapter allow Pro Velo members (of any chapter) to shop for 30 minutes before the general public, which I think is worth the price.

When I arrived here, I also knew nothing about bikes (and still do not claim to), but the velomarkts were a great opportunity to see what is on offer and for what price.

As indicated earlier "Most of the bikes are crap"...... this is true later in the day, so it's also worth going later to see what's left over if you have no idea about bikes.
It's equally as important to learn what is 'crap' as it is to know what is good.
.... personally, I first tried to find a bike that looks crap, but runs well. I figured that would be less likely to get stolen.

Test rides are of course essential. Don't be shy.

Mostly, I'd recommend identifying exactly "What you want"

eg. Town bike, Racer, Mountain bike..... as a rule, I'd avoid hybrids (but there are excepts to this rule).
eg. Racers are quick around town, but they are rough on broken ground, you will blow tyres if you hit gutters, and the wheels seem to be magnetically drawn to tram track.
Mountain bikes maybe smoother, but heavier and slower.
If you live in a hilly area, then something with 1-3 gears may not be the best idea.... etc.
Common sense will prevail.

Don't rush into buying a bike if you are not sure. Ask around first and you'll be surprised what info you can pick up to help assist you with a decision.

That's a great tip.

As I said earlier, if you are ready to buy, go early...... if you can get in before, it's even better.

Looking at that many bikes in one day really helps you to identify what you are looking for, and usually an opportunity to ask questions and learn a little more.

Find people you know who ride bikes, and they will nearly always help you with finding something you like.

You will know when the time to buy is right.

It is never the right time to buy 'spandex' bike clothing in my opinion
