For the past year I have contemplated to get myself an electric guitar, been strummin around on an accustic fender guitar for the past few years, but newer had an actual lesson yet, however I do enjoy making a bit of noice...

For the past few months I was without my accustic and really missed playing. so started browsing around and desided that the time finally had come for me to get electrified, had my mind set out for a Ephiphone Les Paul Standard guitar in terms of sound tone feel and cost vs quality.. thought this was a good compromise.

Today I went out to have a browse around and ended up in a small guitarshop in Basel>

I was part in luck as the shop did display an Epiphone Les paul, albeit the special... but as I am playing left handed i was not in a position to play it...Instead, The shop had a VGS E-Guitar Select Series Eruption Satin Black as below.

After an hour of me chatting and drinking coffee whilst inducing terminal earache and nausea in the staff and other customers within hearing range due to my crap playing..and quite likely also causing Hendrix and other great already dead guitarists to raise from their graves in schok and horror,
I made a desition to buy the guitar and a small practice AMP, the Yamaha THR 5

I got a combined offer of Guitar + amp & a good quality lead incl. stand, strap and gig bag for 750CHF with warranty and lifetime service and support as well as 1/3 off of on a guitar course package.. The guitar felt good, as far as i can tell it was set up quite nicely and sounded awesome (well atleast to me) I guess this was ok as LH guitars usually are coming at a premium.

As I dont know too much about the VGS brand (or to be honest not much Electric guitars in general) I am hoping someone in the know, on the forum perhaps can tell me if I have bought an ok guitar and amp..

feel free also to pass on any good pointers and ancient wisdom you might have to a new Electrified Viking...

Dont know the Guitar brand but looks good and as long as it feels and plays great for you thats all that matters.
I saw a review of this amp and it got very positive feedback. I want one!

Re: Today I bought my first Electric Guitar

In response to the OP original question - VGS is a Korean brand (I think - maybe Vietnamese I can't remember) but designed in Germany )also some input from Switzerland I recall). I have tried a few different models and they were all ok. Definately good value for money, but not top class. Easily good enough to gig if you get that far.

Too much is said about Fender and Gibson these days I think, and there are many good guitars out there that do not have a fancy label on the headstock. That said, I still think the Fender Telecaster is the best around if you get a good one.

Many new guitar players are coming out playing all sorts of guitars now and don't care about the name whereas 20 years ago it had to be Fender, Gibson or Jackson.

I have never had a Yamaha amp, but they are a brand that has a good reputation generally with musical instruments so you should be ok.

I think you got a good buy there, hope you enjoy it :-)

Re: Today I bought my first Electric Guitar

Thanks, I seen 2 guitar shops around that area. I looked in them both but did not really pay too much attention to the prices since the one guitar shop had alot of Fenders and Gibsons. Way out of my price range.
I will have to go back and look again. I also need to find some where I might be able to take some lessons too. I just make noise when I play. It sure is fun though.

Sali,hey Scandi,

As a lifelong professional guitarist I am proud to be using+playing Framus guitars for years;and I highly recommend them as well as their mega awesome company.
Framus instruments are a unique synthesis of craftsmanship and technology. No other guitars and basses, indeed few instruments of any kind;are designed and manufactured with such diligent attention to detail.

I'm glad you like Framus but a totally different league to VGS, and I think Mr PRS, Joel Danzig and Tom Anderson might not agree with your other comments :-)

I had a 10 top PRS for a few years that was top quality and played/looked like a dream but it had no soul. My stray dog of a telecaster plays better, sounds better and feels better.

BTW anybody in the Zurich area interested in VGS guitars like the OP has might want to check out promusig, they had 5 different styles this afternoon and they are all pretty good. They also have the same yamaha amp (which I didn't try - kinda attached to my Soldano...)

Re: Today I bought my first Electric Guitar

Hoi Nigelr,

The comments I wrote are mearly very truthful statements I totally agree from my experiences using, recording+performing with Framus guitars that I copied from their site from their CEO Mr.H.P. Wilfer.

I,myself am a proud owner of 2 custom Diablo Framus guitars;and I love my purple Matchless.

I am currently really mega enjoying my brand new Alvarez AF30CE electric-acoustic with the most truthful sounding B-Band SYS250 preamp 4-band EQ system with a LCD display fully chromatic precision built-in digital tuner.
The B-Band company makes transducers act in much the same way a condenser microphone does. This results in excellent reproduction of REAL & TRUTHFUL acoustic guitar's unique sound.Mr.Räisänen of B-Band is a serious warm-hearted inventor http://www.b-band.com. http://www.alvarezguitars.com

Tschüß,Ciao.

I have never played Framus but I have spoken with H-P a couple of times and he seems like one of the good guys. As a company I like them, but the guitars so far didn't do it for me.

Re: Today I bought my first Electric Guitar

I have a Epiphone Les paul and a marshall amp. I am just making noise now and watching some video's on youtube but it is fun.

I have been thinking about selling my setup though as I found a old VW I would like to buy. I don't know what I am going to do yet.

Re: Today I bought my first Electric Guitar

Which Marshall, which VW?

I'm an expert of both (really)

Oh, and I have a '60 Les Paul Junior, and a '61 Les Paul Standard (among others)

I don't know the model number off hand, I have to look and as far as the VW goes it is a 52 split. Beetle. I only like the aircooled VW's.

Don't forget: Smoke on the Water is plucked with finger and thumb - not strummed with a plectrum.
