I never leave scat... just the occasional claw mark at the window.

My money is on martens as well. You see them all over the place here. They can do pretty much anything that Spiderman can, except fly. They'll run off when approached by humans, much like Jehovah's Witnesses actually.

Re: Identifying my night visitor

I'm sure they're either stone martens or pine martens. We have them at our mountain house (stone martens) and I bought some mothballs which I sprinkled down in their rocky retreat, aka our crawl space. Worked a treat and they left.

They scared me to death when I first heard them. They make quite a racket, gamboling around and around the eaves like it's a race track.

So should I worry? Will they really eat the wiring of cars?

I wonder if I can trap them?

I would bet that Tom has a good recipe for them that he could share.

Had them years ago and the remedies at the time included putting dog's hair in likely areas where they went, that was pointless. Ultra high frequency alarms seem to work in cars or just have marten-proof pipes and cable protection installed, most auto shops should know what you're talking about.

Re: Identifying my night visitor

They'll be attracted to your warm engine if you come home in the evening or at night. It's the warm rubbery cables that they enjoy chewing.

If you have a house, be warned that they can do quite a lot of damage to your roof insulation. It happened to a friend of mine: they manage to enter in the roof and built a nest in the insulating woolly stuff. The mess and the stench was incredible.

Other than that, I think they're very cute creatures

Re: Identifying my night visitor

yes, the buggers really will eat the wiring. Apparently, it's something in the rubber coating that they can't resist

They even have favourite brands, my VW was badly eaten to the point where it needed towing to the garage (due to a punctured brakeline), and a colleagues Audi was similarly savaged. Both in Vevey. The garage told us it was quite common at certain times of the year. Car insurance even has a special provision for it.

Re: Identifying my night visitor

Its surprising what animals get up and about at night. This was our 1st winter in a house and during the snowy period we found all sorts of foot prints in the garden, 1 set i am still convinced was a deer, every morning i would go out and check for new prints, so fun.

Anyway, do you have the means to maybe install a camera up there? i know its radical but would solve your riddle.

Maybe its the killer owl that held our family to ransom in the house 2 nights ago in my husband's nightmare? you can keep it btw
