Re: It's frog mating season

I want to take frog spawn into work so the kids can see all the changes. It's not as simple as people think. You have to assure that when the spawn reach the full development, you will take them back to the original pond.

I'd do it just for the experience.

Re: It's frog mating season

There is a frog courting couple outside the front door of our apartment. They are in a corner with their noses (well the female anyway) up against the wall as if they are trying to hide.
Does anyone know if it is ok to move them? There is a little stream over the road from our apartment with a part of the stream which widens into a kind of pond. Would it be ok to put them there? We don't want to cause them any more stress than they have already been through.

Would it be possible to guide them into a leafy container (perhaps put it next to them and wait until they enter it) and then put the container right next to the edge of the pond/stream side-down and open-top to the side so they can choose to get into the stream or stay in the container?

Do you mean, similar to young mammals and birds, it might be problematic to pick them up because they smell of humans afterwards? Nope. Just pick them up and place them by the river (though some non-flowing or slowly flowing stretch of water would be better).

they're frogs, way more resistant than they look like, you can move them.

Re: It's frog mating season

Thanks all!

We did as suggested, hubby picked them up, and put them in our (empty) compost bin. We had a pleasant walk up to a pond where we could see other frogs swimming around, gently tipped the bin onto its side and the female crawled out onto the undergrowth towards the water.
Hopefully there will soon be another generation of frogs!

Frogs around Entlebuch-Sörenberg-Langnau. A local stopped to pick up the frogs (by hand) and return them to their semi-protected territory.
