Tips for buying a reasonable priced pair of glasses - Basel

The search engine throws up lots of answers for Zurich, can anyone provide me with the same info for Basel? I am happy to go into Germany or France - where have you found a reasonable deal?

Well having bought a new pair of specs before I moved out here, I was rather taken aback on the first night here when we were staying in a hotel, waiting for our furniture to arrive, and took a stroll down the main street in sleepy Liestal and noticed the EXACT same pair of specs in a window for approx 25% cheaper

So, is the UK cheaper and if so, where do you go ? I have a trip to the UK planned end of April (first time in 18 months .. so would rather not spend time in the opticians but if it is cheaper ..)

Re: Tips for buying a reasonable priced pair of glasses - Basel

Just paid Sfr60 for a Pair of prescription sunglasses at Fielmann on Marktplz, I didn't think that was excessive.

http://www.fielmann.ch/filialen/basel/

(also ordered "normal" glasses which were cheaper that the price I'd seen in the UK for the same pair, but cannot say they were cheap, as I fancied treating myself to a designer brand .... But they have stylish pairs from about Sfr 100 all-in)

Particularly liking the idea of prescription sunglasses ...

Went in a couple of times but they were unbelievably busy and it was impossible to get anyone's attention .. so scampered back out. I shall have to persevere.

You went on a Saturday then

The last few times (in the last weeks), the shop manager is normally waiting by the front door and she was very quick to ask what I needed and pointed to the right people/parts of the shop. Whilst there last time, I overheard more than one customer being helped in English, should that be required.

Just had a look at the discount glasses links above and the frames I just brought from Fielmann were Sfr60 cheaper here than on the Framesdirect link

Re: Tips for buying a reasonable priced pair of glasses - Basel

Last year when I needed two pairs of glasses (one sunglasses), I priced everything up and it was cheaper to go to the UK for them.

I got mine from Specsavers, where I got both pairs for the price of one, free coating on the first and a free extended eye test (glaucoma tests, retinal health etc.).

If you're going to the UK anyway, I'd give your local high street branch a ring and see what offers they have on.

Re: Tips for buying a reasonable priced pair of glasses - Basel

Thanks for the UK tips .. there is a Dolland & Aitchison in the town where we are visiting .. the shop from the outside looks like a specsavers (ie. lots of bargains/stack them high sell them cheap) .. so are they another version of the same thing or should I take a trip into the big smoke (Manchester) and see out Specsavers? Anyone used D&A?

I agreed with Fielmann. I got a nice pair of Gucci for a very very good deal and insurance give back a % of the price.

It is in downtown close to H&M.

Re: Tips for buying a reasonable priced pair of glasses - Basel

I recommend www.otticanet.com I went to 4 different optic stores in SG looking for prescription Ray Bans, I got quoted more than CHF 600.00 in all of them. I tried the models I liked and remembered my frame size.

I ended buying two pairs online for around CHF 135.00 each including Rx and shipping. Just keep in mind you might have to adjust the temples yourself.
Thats something to consider if you want to save over 75% of the cost in CH.

Re: Tips for buying a reasonable priced pair of glasses - Basel

Feilmann has some great prices for frames, the spot where they can get expensive is with lens needs and options.

I believe they do have package pricing for some inexpensive pair, even sunglasses, but that often is dependent upon prescription as well. If you just wear single vision and want simple uv protection (generally recommended for any pair, not just sunglasses), it shouldn't run up too high.

If you want fancy stuff, it does start to climb, and can climb quickly - a superb pair of sunglasses would consist of a sturdy frame with spring hinges, polycarbonate lenses (because they're the most impact resistant), polarized to help with glare, a mirror on the front to further help with brightness and glare, and anti-reflective coating on the back. Something like this though, even in the US, would tend to run up around $500 and more.

Meanwhile, if your prescription is simple and low, you can probably find "packages" around just about anywhere for between 60 - 100... and I don't list a currency because those seem to be "magic numbers" for people feeling good value for price just about anywhere (and would really probably be "59 to 99" ).

Oh, and let me know if / when you want to go, I'll happily come along and help consult if you'd like.

I agree with you. Me and my partner also got our prescription glasses via otticanet. Obviously we already had the prescription, we took a look here in Zurich of the glasses we wanted and then we both ordered online by less than half the price. We had to pay taxes here when the items arrived though, but even still it was a lot cheaper.
