Re: Beware thieves at zurich airport

from Alyzsa24 on the "Thieves on trains" thread:

Just a heads up everyone those thieves are still out there!!!!!
Someone stole my bag in te airport yeterday@TERMINAL 2 near the gate,i think the target of these guys are families with small kids since they know the parent's attention are on kids of course for a parent like me id rather lose a luggage instead of loosing my kids so someone took advantage on it ,i put my bag on the luggage cart to hold my 7mnth-old daughter and like a magic it disappeared so all our boarding passes and passports my stuff are gone we immedietly reported it to the police since its just downstairs near starbucks and after a minute or 2 a policeman came and found a wallet which is mine and an hour later someone found my bag in the womens restroom and we are thankful that all the documents are still there but my Ipad is gone but i dont care much of it my first concer is our passport,so we missed our flight have to rebook it with 2000chf penalty with all the stress it caused and crying hungry babies etc.

I never imagined that it happened to me in CH airport so the policeman said always take good care of your bags or within seconds it's gone.

P.S Policemen have told us that they don't have cctv cameras at the airport that much because of the stupid swiss law about "PRIVACY"

Why the groan Corbets? Or do you sympathise in some way with these scum? Should we ask them nicely to come along to the police station, or maybe, just maybe, ripping their shoulder muscles might stop them lifting a hand bag an hour later.

I could write more about you, let me just say I don't like your attitude.

Well done OP - you did the right thing. I wish I'd been there to help you out.

For those new to the Forum, here's an old thead

Robbed at Zurich airport

And my advice at the time is still valid:

Robbed at Zurich airport

I just flew yesterday out of ZRH and am flying again next week. Today I toyed with the idea of using one of my cuter handbags because I was tired of looking like a student...i've now repacked everything back into my messenger. Thank you so much for this thread, OP !

Re: Beware thieves at zurich airport

Thank you so much to all those who said they would have helped if they had been there. Very much appreciated and proves you cannot judge everyone by the actions of the few.

I like to think that some of those who were nearby would have helped if they had realised instantly what was happening. It just happened so quickly and people often don't react quickly enough. Like me they were probably too pre-occupied to really see what was going on around them.

I just acted on pure instinct when I grabbed him and again when I let him go! But I was highly motivated by the potential loss of my bag which would have meant the cancellation of my weekend plans. Funny enough it was to a contact sports lecture day in Bath!

So a couple of lesson learnt

1. Do not make yourself an easy target as I did by putting my bag down.

2. When you have the upper hand as I did don't them let go.

So sorry to hear that someone else was not as lucky as I and did have their bag stolen. I really hope it was not the same guy that I let go!

And yes, I do believe that all women should know the basics of self defence. Size does not matter if you know a little bit about head and body position and how to generate force and power

Thanks again

Lynda

I too groaned your post because your supposition is bigoted and unhelpful.

@OP I think you did the right thing to let go for two reasons:

No matter what your competencies, you were in a violent encounter and things could have turned nasty. Glad you showed the upper hand though.

The police may have a hard time proving the alleged thief was actually a thief and perversely you could have had an assault charge against you.

It's infuriating we have to take our shoes and belts off at security but there are no cameras in such places.

Oh, my, how shall I fall asleep tonight knowing that you don't like my attitude? Do write more, if it makes you feel better - but please do it on a separate thread, so this one stays on topic.

I'm all for beating the tar out of thieves (or attempted thieves) and wish the OP had managed to do little more damage. Your assumption that the thief must be one of those god-awful foreigners, however, is fairly small-minded and classless, especially considering most of the readers of this forum are ourselves foreigners.

Re: Beware thieves at zurich airport

Yesterday someone stole my bag in terminal 2 near the gate after the check-in area.

i had to hold my daughter and i put my bag on the luggage cart then it disappeared like magic within a minute ,then an hour later someone found it in Women's restroom in Terminal 1 just downstairs and i never went there, i assumed at first maybe i just accidentaly left it somewhere and someone gave it to the lost and found dept. but the policemen recovered my wallet first on the floor somewhere next my bag from lost and found....good thing our passports are still there but i lost my ipad and we missed our flight and have to pay 2000CHF for rebooking penalty

the funny thing is, they didn't get my bank atm, credit card, money, phone, ipad charger though they are all together and it's easy to see.

my husband checked-in the luggage earlier and he felt like a guy on his back is kinda suspicious and observing his pocket since his iphone is there in the jeans pocket at the back, then he took his iphone right away then he looked at the guy and that guy acted as if he is looking around searching for something and disappeared right away.

so what my husband did ,he sat in starbucks downstairs and observed he analized what might happened yesterday ,he said the toilet in terminal 2 before going to the gate poeple are checking all the stuff to make sure if they have everything before boarding .....and he noticed

1)near the toilette in terminal 2 there is an elevator which is an easy access to go out from that area and it's kinda hidden so no one will notice that he ran there

2)downstairs maybe another person is waiting for him (probably a lady since my bag was found in women's toilette)to hand over the bag.

3)another toilet is just right that elevator and it's easy for them to check the bag and to take any valuables real quick

4)the exit on terminal1 is just few steps from that toilette so maybe another one is waiting there again to take the stolen stuff out.

it's so easy and simple and i think those guys are professionally trained of doing it.

so we have to be more aware of everything and be alert specially on that area.

P.S thats what we thought of the possible scenario that had happened to me yesterday cuz no other easier way to go out on that area and it's true that they have a lot of accomplice standing around passing the stolen stuff one to the other as if they're doing relay race.

Waiting in line to check in at the Easyjet counter the other day I stupidly put my handbag on top of my suitcase and turned my head. Luckily the line moved forward and I turned back to move my luggage only to see a thief had already picked up the handbag and was about to walk off with it. He so nearly succeeded I do martial arts and my first reaction was to grab his arm and pull him towards me and he dropped my bag. Being female, I carry everything in that bag – wallet, keys, iphone etc, etc. I am shocked how brazen this guy was so everyone please be extra vigilant at the airport. THIEVES ARE WORKING THERE. Don’t make yourself an easy target as I did Best Lynda
Sorry to hear that you became a victim of this problem plaguing all airports and rail stations. Zürich Airport over the loadspeaker warns in several languages about thieves, which is nice, but not so easy to put into practice. They indeed speak as if everybody had five hands, but most people only have two. Thieves of course love the actual check-in area and look out for small luggage pieces (usually containing cameras and cash etc) either behind or at the side of passengers who become absorbed by the check-in procedure. Good advice is far from easy. I suggest that everybody tries to find individual solutions

Poor you to have to go through that ordeal and I'm so glad you got your bag back.

Question. So, whilst all this commotion was happening, everyone else just stood around watching?!

I cannot really say as I was not there, BUT I am 99% certain that everyone else did not even realize what went on. Such things happen in such a short time that your chance as one of the "everyone else" to do something useful is absolutely minimal. And while it would have been nice, had the culprit been handed over to police, I support those policemen who argue against such actionism as some of those culprits may have REAL knifes with them and use that weaponry in full if in distress.

Let's say the police did catch him. What happens?

They catch him, fine him, throw in prison and then let him go free only to start the vicious circle again.
This of course is what many policemen find so frustrating. They at times catch culprits, and see the chaps a few days later (after a fine or a short time behind bars) in their surveillance area again ! However, police covers and registers the identities of such folks and in case of repetition, will have the details on their computers Europe-wide, and their investigation departments ofen find out links of those groups. All this will not really solve the problem, but will help to reduce it or at least prevent it from expanding.

Hah - Airport-Security!
They can't even stop petty crime - do you think they could stop a terrorist?
A) We here speak about the "open areas" accessible to everybody. Which has NOTHING to do with "airport security", but very simply with the Cantonal Police, not different from other places in the Canton.

B) Then you have the "passengers zone" where only people with a ticket or professionals with a relevant identity card are allowed in.

C) Then you have the "aircraft area" where only controlled passengers are allowed in.

Airport Security only is relevant in case of B) and C) but NOT in case of A)

Exactly - I think some people naturally equate airports with secure environments but that only applies 'airside' in the case of Zurich (and almost anywhere else). Really until you have gone past boarding pass control Zurich airport is more like a city centre (not a shopping mall as they tend to be more secure with greater CCTV coverage and security personnel), and from what others have said, a city centre with little CCTV.

At least Kantonal police often are seen in the public areas but I am uncertain as to how many of them are there to patrol those areas and how many are simply on their way too/from the immigration/security check desks which they also man if I recall correctly.

It sounds like a police sting operation would go a long way to finding the usual culprits. e.g. deploy 4 plain clothes police as 2 couples with bags of suntan lotion, camera gear, and ipads and set up a trap. Run this regularly with different age officers, on different days of the week and a pattern would emerge. The thieve gangs would get the message and move on - they always go for easy targets - the secret is to make Zurich a less easy target.

So sorry that it happened to you. The lady at Easyjet counter told me that this happens all the time.

Check your credit cards though. I got that sometimes they deliberately leave cards but have taken a note of the details and pin on the back which is all that is needed to shop on the internet. People are just glad that they got them back and don't think they could have been copied.

So horrible that we are having a lesson in how these thieves operate

If I'd seen someone running off with the bag I would try and stop them and get the bag back, but if they dropped the bag then I wouldn't take the risk of getting involved after that.

If it's anything like in the UK doing anything to try and stop a thief would either get you stabbed or charged with assault...

The bag was already recovered and it'll be on cctv so airport security or the police can deal with it from there.

Glad you got your bag back.

Re: Beware thieves at zurich airport

Just to add a different occasion on the same venue....
My wife and my kid were returning to Zurich and had checked my kid's stroller. They were one of the last ones to leave the plane and thus one of the last ones at baggage claim. Suitcases were there but not the stroller. After talking to the airline staff, they said they located their stroller and tried hard to push an old stroller saying it was ours (!!!).
Long story short, we lost the stroller and could never be located by the airline. My wife is convinced another family arriving earlier at the baggage claim took our stroller and left theirs. After many stressing emails and calls the airline has agreed to pay part of a new stroller while we want ours back or 100% cost of a new one, same brand and model.

Now comes the best. You all are probably thinking this happened with a cheap airline.... Wrong! Swiss airlines.

@Edu thanks for the warning: you pay the airlines, and they pay the airports for the luggage handling. Swiss is liable for the loss, but the airport is ultimately responsible for allowing the theft. All checked baggage and strollers are labelled and you have the receipt, you can claim against your travel insurance.

Swiss International Airlines is liable for the loss, as the piece in question simply did NOT arrive. Where that other stroller came from is irrelevant.

And for the records, if a theft happens at the luggage handout facility, it is NOT the Airport company which is in charge, but Swissport (since 2011 owned by PAI Partners [Parisbas Affaires Internationales]) which operates the place. Add to this that the airlines do not pay the airport but Swissport.

Re: Beware thieves at zurich airport

HI everyone

This is my first post on the forum as I am only in Switzerland part of the time at the moment and my mum will probably kill me for this post

But wanted to say that Lynda is my mum and I am so proud of her. She is really tiny but incredibly strong and tough. A real mighty midget!

She is just over 5ft tall but ice and rock climbs, paraglides etc. She can also do more chin-ups than most men! She is a really good trainer too!

You should have seen how she can push around some of the big American Football players as well.

When she told me my first thought was that I was surprised that she didn't chase after him. And I know she is really annoyed with herself for letting him go too

But she got her bag back and did not get hurt

Thank you
