Living in Lausanne ?

I got a scholarship at EPFL for 6 months ( for an internship programme) . They will be paying me chr 1600 per month. Yesterday I got to know the apartment that they have found me cost about 880. So will I be able to live in with the remaining 720.
I just want to eat , cover travel cost , mobile bills and the electricity bills ? No fancy things.

One more thing. Normally does the apartment cost includes the electricity bill and internet or do i have to cover it ?

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

It depends on your spending habits.

You'll have 720 CHF per month, which works out to roughly 24 CHF per day.

A typical meal at EPFL would set you back 8 CHF, a sandwich 6 CHF for dinner. You'll still have 10 CHF left for everything else.

If you'll prepare everything at home, which is what a lot of people here are doing (including postdocs), you'll most likely be okay. If you plan to dine out everyday, 24 CHF doesn't go a long way in a city where even a Kebab costs 7-10 CHF.

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

I think you can manage for six months. About 50 CHF for groceries per week and use your old mobile and get a pre-paid sim card. Much traveling isn't in your budget though, trains aren't cheap even with a half-tax card.

Electricity, warm water and internet isn't included in our rent but that might be different for short term apartments from the EPFL, you have to ask them.

What about health insurance? If you don't have one from your home country that covers you abroad you'll need one here. There are ones for foreign students (swisscare for example) that would cost you something like 50-100 CHF per month.

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

@zymogen : that 800 includes electricity and internet . And I'm hoping to get a health insurance from my country.

So it seems that i can manage with what i get. It is a big relief thanks a lot for all the replies.

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

Hey pamu,
Congratulations!
I also got a grant from an institution in Lausanne, UNIL. Exact same quantity (1600/month).

Did you school offer you a room in their school just like that? I think for myself, I have to fend for myself when looking for housing...

Where are you from? Pm me and let's get to know each other... I'm hoping to build a network before I get there.

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

Well, first of all congrats on the scholarship, it's a great school. To answer your question, you can live off CHF 720.-, normally in Student Appartements, the electricity is included, but not guaranteed. One thing I can tell you if that's not the case, the electricity bill comes once every two months and as long as you don't use it excessively (leaving your computer on while you sleep, mass downloads, etc...) it should come out between 70 and 150 francs for 2 months.

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

Travel will be difficult, it is very expensive. But what I suggest, is to save up some money and buy a 1 month Swiss Pass for 590 CHF (if you are under 26 years old) and to travel extensively during that particular month.

Re: Living in Lausanne ?

Yes you can live off of that.

My husband's club pays for our apartment and we have never had to pay for utilities if that helps.
