Re: Potential Lausanne move

God, this is taking a long time

Taken the excitement out of the whole thing really as we are in limbo until a decision is made either way. Should hopefully be resolved next month, but I've been saying that for ages.

It will also mean that if we do come it will be in winter, rather than in the middle of summer when it is warm and sunny. Don't know how much chance we will have to go skiing if we are sorting out somewhere to live, jobs etc.

*sigh* Who knows!!?!

Look at the positives - you won't have hiring interviews on Saturday and Sunday so it won't impede ski trips

Re: Potential Lausanne move

Hi TH
Do what so many others do..... live over this side of the lake, in France!
Much, much cheaper, more availability, far less expensive and regular boats sailing with daily commuters. If you need more help/information, please send a private email - we have helped many in the past, many now installed happily in beautiful, glorious Evian-les-Bains.

Re: Potential Lausanne move

Thanks evianers. I guess that is something we can think about when I get a job. I know it's difficult, and I may have to go somewhere like Geneva I guess. Wouldn't want a boat trip and a train ride as a commute. Definitely an option though.

Re: Potential Lausanne move

Yes, a lot of things are expensive here, but you can find cheaper if you shop around. Aldi and Lidl are both here in Switzerland now and you can find good deals from them on offer every week. I also do most of my food shopping there. Otto's is another good place to find bargains. Electronic goods tend to be cheaper and petrol is still lower than UK or France. Also insurance prices are pretty stable, apart from health insurance. Our car insurance has only gone up just over CHF100 in 14 years, much less than what the equivalent would have been in the UK I expect.

It's a case of learning where the bargains can be had and then using that knowledge to keep costs down. Prices vary between cantons too; petrol here in Fribourg city is sometimes up to 10 centimes cheaper than in Lausanne.

Re: Potential Lausanne move

Well, everything finally seems to be sorted. I did wonder if it was going to happen but we finally have an offer. Looking like I will be out at the beginning of January, which at least means we have Christmas to do all our visiting and goodbyes.

Now all I have to do is pack up the flat. And get a job. And learn a new language...

Re: Potential Lausanne move

A lot of English people that come over to Lausanne generally are working somewhere where knowing the language isn't important, however if you don't have a job when you arrive then if you aren't lucky enough to get something a the major companies (ultra competitive) then it won't be easy. I would start checking out the job sites and fine tuning your cv before you arrive.
