I never could understand how people could hit each other let alone family members. I am a Panda anyway so don't understand these human ways.

Re: Rape and Assaults in Basel

Please be aware that carrying peppersprays containing CS gas (and CA, CN, CAR gas) is illegal in Switzerland (unless you have a permit to carry weapons, which is much harder to get than a permit to buy weapons). Illegally carrying a weapon (such as CS gas) is punishable by fine or up to three years in prison.

Actually, this is incorrect. Any pepperspray classified as Xi;R36/37 (which falls under the Chemikaliengesetz/verordnung) is allowed to be carried by an adult (18+), but can only be bought with an ID and signature.

Here is a question, what % of serious sexual assaults or assaults in general are being committed by foreigners and how many by local Swiss?
I did a good search on the bfs.admin.ch Statistics Page. Here are the results (image link).

http://i48.tinypic.com/nqy82b.jpg

So there you have it. Almost double all rape crimes reported in CH in the last 3 years committed by foreigners.

Cold, hard facts. The chef serves what the client requests...

Actually, your correction is misleading. Why would you do that?

You are mixing peppersprays (which in most cases contain oleoresin capsicum and are classified as Xi etc.) with "peppersprays" that "contain" CS gas ("classified" as weapons).

Legally speaking:
As per Art. 1 Abs. 1 Bst. b of the federal Waffenverordnung ("federal ordinance on weapons") spraying devices containing the substances mentioned in Anhang 2 of the same Verordnung are considered weapons in the sense of Art. 4 Abs. 1 Bst. b of the federal Waffengesetz ("federal weapons act".)

The substances mentioned in Anhang 2 are:
CA (Brombenzylcyanid)
CS (o-Chlorbenzylidenmalonsäuredinitril)
CN (ù-Chloracetophenon)
CR (Dibenz(b,f)-1,4-oxazepin

So again: Sprays containing CS gas are weapons in Switzerland. Please be aware that importing/carrying etc. such sprays without the proper permits/documents etc. can have legal consequences.

The police of Basel has a good reputation and so I hope they will get the problem under control. But to combat rape is not easy. And women in the Basel area are getting increasingly nervous and angry.

"English and Arabic and NorthAfrican" ? if correct, this means Egypt. Now there are roughly 10 mio. Egyptians or people of Egyptian origin in Western Europe, which does not exactly help police too much

Re: Rape and Assaults in Basel

This is making me even more nervous.

My girlfriend is from Basel and is living there again now after living in the UK with me while I was there.
In the UK she never thought anything could happen because it was so safe growing up in Basel, luckily nothing did happen, but I had to warn her many times not to wander the streets at night.

But now in Basel, she was down by the Rhein at a park with another female friend, catching up well into the night, I will now have to implore her to be more careful and not be out so late, especially not alone. :/

Can anyone tell me where the most dangerous parts of the city are?
When I was there last year it was usually quiet, I only ever noticed rowdy teens on one night.

Kiaora NZSwiss, Basel is NOT a dangerous place - it is safer living here than in any of the main NZ cities (and probably many of the smaller places as well.)

Although women should be able to walk alone anywhere, anytime, the fact is that is is not a sensible thing for anyone ( male or female) to be walking alone through darkened parks at after dark in any part of the world. I am sure youre Swiss girlfriend is fully aware of this.

Re: Rape and Assaults in Basel

She surely is, but she can be very very stubborn when it comes to this sort of thing.

I know it's much safer of course, I would never let her walk around in the middle of the night here, but I still worry, I just want her to be safe and not take such risks.

Hopefully she will listen to me and the fact that there has been such horrible crimes lately, and try not to stay out too late and away from these places (:

Re: Rape and Assaults in Basel

Thank you for this rich discussion
My wife is arriving to Basel very soon.
Even though she is 1,80m tall i don't think it's enough to keep guys to a distant respect...

I still don't know about the pepper spray. Maybe i get an 'official' one

And good for you, Panda!
I would still expose the case and make a description of that guy to the police, just in case he pulls the same trick again later.
Just in case there is no Panda in the neighborhood....

Cheers

you'd be surprised how many people are not aware of this. My girlfriend insisted on walking through a pitch dark park with no street lighting on a recent visit to Vienna just to visit some "observation tower" in the evening :-(

Donauturm, right?

Been there, done that! Why in the world is the park next to Donauturm TOTALLY dark??? Luckily we did cross it without any problem, but I think they should install a bit of lighting there.... Most unsafe feeling I ever had during a trip. The view from Doanuturnm though was rewarding

i did a "sniff test" between pepper spray and CS spray - the pepper spray wins with the biggest nasal effect.

what difference there is regarding eyes im not trying!

yes, that is the place. The view is great but crossing that park is unsettling. All the nearby tower blocks don't exactly make you feel more secure either.
