Moving to Zurich or vicinity

Hello everyone,

My partner and I have been in London for a decade and now are seriously considering moving to Zurich or its vicinity.

I would appreciate any comments as to people's views on areas of Zurich or its vicinity. I have read much about the 'gold coast' and the like but would appreciate personal views from forum readers.

Our intention is to initially rent a small apartment in Zurich center for a few months to get to know the city and surrounding and then rent a house further out but with good public transport access to get into town.

Are there any areas to definitely avoid?

Are there areas that are considered more international or with a larger expat population? (apart from the obvious ones around international schools) I speak fluent german but my partner does not.

Are there particular time periods in the year during which searching for rental may be more successful? Close of school year (or before summer), for example?

For the short rental in Zurich, are the chances better for a furnished or unfurnished apartment?

Any comments are highly appreciated.

Thanks! Abraham

Re: Moving to Zurich or vicinity

Can't help with best periods of the year to look, but rentals do tend to expire/start at the end/beginning of each quarter.

The Gold Coast (the Meilen side) gets more sunshine and is more expensive, but there is probably a bigger expat population along the other coast - Thalwil / Horgen / Waedenswil.

Anywhere round the lake seems good. Train services to Zurich are fast and frequent pretty much wherever you are. Check www.sbb.ch.

I presume residency / employment / finance is no problem?
