2. Lugano
3. Luzern
4. Zermatt (sorry, Wolli, if Stein am Rhein is a city, then anything goes)
5. Lausanne
6. Geneva

Hmm, favourite Swiss cities ...

1. Zürich
2. Bad Ragaz
3. Luzern
4. St Gallen
5. Schaffhausen
6. Nyon (is this big enough to be a city?)

Neuchâtel & Lugano were just off the bottom of the list ... I found friendly locals in both places, even though I speak very little French or Italian. A restaurant owner in Lugano even gave a helpful Italian lesson to the whole family (me, wife & three kids), teaching us the names of the crockery, cutlery and dishes & drinks we'd ordered.
Bugger, just remembered something ... can I slip Engelberg in at #3, shoving poor little Nyon off the bottom of the table? I'm jumping on the "if Stein am Rhein is a city ..." bandwagon, even though there are only 4 000 people ... surely tourists can count as extra population?

So sorry, but while Stein am Rhein is a histrorical and official city, Zermatt according to their own WEBsite http://gemeinde.zermatt.ch/ clearly is NOT but just a village

Not "anything" goes. The status of city in case of Stein am Rhein was/is accepted by Zürich, Schaffhausen and the Swiss Confederation.

NO, tourists are NOT counted. IF so Davos and St. Moritz would be CITIES as they both in season including tourists have more than 10'000 inhabitants (both between 25'000 and 30'000)

The Ville de Nyon http://www.nyon.ch/fr/index.php of course IS a CITY
while Engelberg http://www.gde-engelberg.ch/de/ is NOT a city, but just a Gemeinde (village)

To be honest, I read the thread title as "6 Favourite Swiss Places"... I barely consider Zurich to be a city.
Ditto. You can come up with any arbitrary definition of a city.

Frankly, I don't think you should be able to call yourself a city unless you have:

- at least 2 million inhabitants
- a GDP of at least US$ 30bn
- No fewer than 5 McDonalds
- A KFC
- Weekly world class cultural events
- At least 40 different pubs/clubs of which at least 10 are open until at least 3am every night
- Shops that are open on Sundays

So, Vevey positive
Montreux, Davos, trin negative
Just goes to show that these definitions of cities are totally useless and can be safely ignored.

You cannot call yourself a city unless you have spikes on your cathedral. So said a tourist guide in London 6 years ago

So sorry, maybe I should have named the thread "6 Favorite Swiss Cantons and Half-Cantons?". That would have been very specific, here are mine then:

Luzern
Bern
Vaud
Zurich
Geneva
Basel-Stadt

By your definition there here simply is ONE city, the City of Switzerland , but I above simply referred to Swiss laws, as it is about places in Switzerland.

Re: 6 Favorite Swiss Cities?

I'm going to break the rules and put down my 6 favorite Swiss places, cities or not. In no particular order:

1. Rapperswil
2. Gimmelwald
3. Appenzell
4. Basel
5. Zurich
6. The whole canton of Graubünden
