Grill party in the apartment

Hi
I am planning to organize a grill party in our apartment, so need to invest in buying a great grill first. I love to get one of those (wood grills) but have heard that in Zurich it is not allowed to have wood grills (which apparently smoke) in your balcony !!!
Is this true?
Is it an obligation to have only electric/gas grills in the balcony?

Thanks a lot ahead for enlighting me
Best,
Sara

Re: Grill party in the apartment

Check your rental contract and with the neighbours. Some places it is allowed, but find out before you buy the grill!

Thanks, It is not actually written in the contract, but I guessed it is a rather rule from municipality. I will check with neighbours, thats a good idea. THanks again.

Re: Grill party in the apartment

The rule is: what is ok for them is not necessarily ok for you!
I have some strange rules in my place, I rarely follow them but they have been pointed out, such as drying clothes on balcony in the sun, leaving canopy open etc. I had to chuckle when these things were being brought to my attention in a serious manner amongst other minute crazy stuff such as how long you can dry clothes, less than 24 hours by the way.
So you can imagine my surprise when the downstairs couple lit up their charcoal BBQ this weekend and the whole block and balconies were awash with smoke......and with everyone enjoying the sun on the balconies this weekend, I expected it wouldnt be long before something was said. But..... would you believe it, it was all good! No complaints!
Just have a few spare burgers ready to offer the neighbours, but it should be fine.
re: choice of bbq. Charcaol defo gives the best flavour in my opinion. But, take 40 odd minutes to get ready to cook on, and cause a lot of smoke as mentioned. I picked up a gas bbq, with the charcoals in the bottom that heat up, was couple hundred at inter discount, and its great. You need to let it burn off the residual brand newness before it tastes real good tho.

No, either it's in the building rules, or not, there are no such municipality rules about such matters.

No, it isn't. I have been using a charcoal BBQ for many years in Zurich and never had any complaints but we're on the top floor, so no neighbors above who get smoked.

Re: Grill party in the apartment

You would have an easier time with the neighbours if you planned the grill party at a lake or on a river bank. The local Gemeinde might be able to recommend places where you could grill in peace.

As others have pointed out, if it isn't "verboten" in your rental contract, it might be forbidden in the (attached) house regulations.
