Depends on where you live and where the job is.

Also, pay can be NET (you get 2000 in your hand after your employer has paid everything) or not. Contract should state this.

I would get a copy of a contract or draft contract before you spend anything on travel.

Do you have an EU passport?

I did rent a place in Montreux for a few months last summer and it was 500CHF per month excluding bills. It was small and not very nice. But it was only 30 seconds walk from the lake front and 3 mins walk to the migros which is basically the cheapest place to shop.

If I worked nearby then my only other forced costs would be health insurance. Approx 300 chf per month.

You can get a migros branded phone and sim card for 30chf including 15chf credit and you could get away with only topping up 10chf per month.

A small beer is around 4chf.

Is this possible if you are working as a stagiaire? I am currently with assura paying approx 300chf per month and would love to change!
Yes, Do check out swisscare.

Where I live - yes, no problem. In Geneva or Zurich - tough.

Re: Is it possible to live in Switzerland on Sfr. 2000/ month?

Hey All,

Your advice is so helpful!I will be a student at the University of Bern as from Sept and i have been stressing about surviving there.

My scholarship will be giving me a monthly allowance of 1500 CHF for rent, food, transport etc.

I just signed a rental agreement for 780 CHF in a student residence for a studio flat,en suite bathroom and kitchen. I could have opted for a single room for about 550 CHF but then i would have had to share the bathroom which i did not want to do.

So that leaves me 720 CHF for food, a monthly train ticket of about 75 CHF, student insurance of 100CHF and entertainment.

Im feeling much better that i will survive if i stick to a budget!

I imagine you're doing an internship. So yes, you're qualified. Swisscare has a plan for students, researchers and trainees/interns. Covers everything required by law at a fraction of the cost.

You can still moonlight. Tutoring is usually the best option. Possible to earn 300-400 more a month.

The vast majority of students in Switzerland have around 2'000.- CHF or less, so yes it's definitely possible to live on that.

On another note, once you're there ask your immigration office if you can work part-time and how much. Ask nicely and don't push it, you don't want to make the impression you're here for work, but you can easily earn 20-25.-/hour to boost your budget a bit.

Re: Is it possible to live in Switzerland on Sfr. 2000/ month?

Hi there!

Of course it is possible. When I first came here I received 1200 per month for my internship.
I got a room with two flat mates for 600/month, a transport card for 80/month, and the health insurance for about 200/month. You bring you own food for lunch and might not be able to go for dinner out but it is very possible to live without any problem on 2000/month.

Have fun in your internship!

Re: Is it possible to live in Switzerland on Sfr. 2000/ month?

I lived in Zürich as an intern on 1600 (after tax) per month and had to scrimp and save on all essentials, but overall had an absolute blast. still managed a fair few ski weekends over the winter...
Having said that, I am pretty glad that my salary has been upgraded!
Yes you can survive but it depends on what your idea of "surviving" is...

Worth noting that in the Kanton of Zurich, if you are studying or emplyed as an intern / trainee / praktikant / stagiare , and have an EHIC health insurance card, you can fill in a form to claim exemption from having to pay health insurance. Apologies but I don't know if this is the same in Bern though. PM me if it would be useful to you to see the documents.

I think you can survive as a student , but you need to manage wisely. Restaurants are very expensive. You need to. Share the apartment with others to reduce the cost. Good luck

Re: Is it possible to live in Switzerland on Sfr. 2000/ month?

I would say it is doable but I don't think it can last for long. Normally, you can get a room in shared flat with about CHF700 and you would also need another CHF250 for your health insurance. I believe that you can manage with CHF for the rest of your expenses.
