Re: Switzerland stages cow-fighting championship

We saw this last year in the Valais (you can see the Valais signs on the arena in the video). It was in Martigny -- very big deal and kinda cool. It was packed. I reco if you haven't done this yet to take a look. Interesting Swiss culture thing and great for kids. You can see and pet the cows also. It is not violent at all as the video mentions.

As fas as I can work out, this is "news" because it has become "international"...

"Cow fighting"! The cows don`t fight. They just establish dominance - shoving at each other with their horns/heads.

They avoid eye contact, which means they have no interest in fighting. It`s their handlers who shove their heads at each other and try and promote the shoving. Stupid really. It`s like the Swiss trying to play South African rugby - so they invented Flag Football.

Erm, how does one tell if cows are avoiding eye contact exactly?
I've seen both cows and sheep engaging in this activity in their normal environment.

Re: Switzerland stages cow-fighting championship

I don't understand what all the fuss is about...

a bar in my hometown used to stage cow fighting every friday night with huge crowds..... oh no wait... that was Jello wresting.

p.s.. re eye contact... I can't talk about cows but I was up on Bodmin Moor a few years ago trapped in a bit of a snow squall so I took what looked like a nice little path... and nearly walked into a ram who was walking towards me... he definitely made eye contact... cowardice being the better part of valour I let him have the track and I went off across the moor.

When an animal turns it`s head away from the other animal - that is avoiding eye contact.

The handlers cling to their necks and try and force them to face each other. When the two heads are head-on, being animals, their eyes then meet, and they then begin to shove at each other with their horns.

Yes, all animals engage in this activity. It`s called establishing dominance. Even cats do it. Never seen how they turn their heads away when feel threatened by a "superior" cat being? ... they may yeowl at each other, but only if they stare do they get attacked.

Prishe has made some interesting contributions
Re: Switzerland stages cow-fighting championship

The announcer explained on TV that eventually, the cows will lock horns and establish dominance, but it could take days....so the handlers are there to speed it up. (Yes that's an admission I watched it on TV, but only for 10 minutes!)
