Re: Expat vs. Immigrant

Expat is when you are in the country for a project of some sort, and won't mind going back to where you came from. Staying in the country is not an objective.

Immigrant is when staying in the country is one of your goals.

Most sensible definition so far.

Re: Expat vs. Immigrant

Expat is technically wrong. An expatriate (often shortened to expat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing, as an immigrant, in a country other than that of their citizenship. The word comes from the Latin terms ex ("out of") and patria ("country, fatherland"). So there, no difference. Topic may be closed

Yes, of course. I am non-EU and soon Brits will have to be treated like the scum that I represent. Dreadful!
That will be no problem for the scummy (non EU) Swiss

The same person is an expat from the point of view of the country he/she left yet an immigrant from the point of view of the country he came to.
Didn't we discuss this already in some other thread?

This theme pops up regularly on EF. Apparently, some people do care about how should they be called or call themselves..

Who cares? I'm an immigrant. In 10 years I will be Swiss. Many Swiss citizens started their Swissness this way. They just pretend to not remember this

That's why SVP - unfortunately - invented a new definition: You will be a "Swiss with polish roots" (but only if you turn criminal it will be mentioned in the press)

Maybe. In the case of my wife's Polish great-grandfather, it was four years, but he was a refugee. But things have changed in the past 150 years.

My wife isn't, despite her Polish family name. Same with Roger Schawinski.

Same with Roger Schawinski.
And Stanislas Wawrinka. Triple whammy, he's Swiss with Polish and Czech roots and a German passport...
