Re: Expat vs. Immigrant

An expat would have relocated for primarily work-reasons. Maybe it can be seen as a subset of "Immigrant"!

expat is a social/cutlural term, immigrant is a legal/policy term. there are no expat statutes or regulations, but virtually all countries have enacted immigration legislation. all immigrants are expats and all expats are immigrants.
Actually I think quite a lot of countries have expat policies. For example in Singapore, you can break your rental and phone contracts if you are an expat and are posted out of the country. The same does not apply to immigrants. That's a great idea for the Swiss authorities I think - in Singapore solves many potential gripes that would be similar to here on housing and the contracts for necessities - would reduce the traffic on this forum by 50% I reckon!

Re: Expat vs. Immigrant

This debate continues without a firm answer. The Guardian has a different take on it to most of the posts here:

Why are white people expats when the rest of us are immigrants?

Are you an expat or an immigrant and is there a difference?

Its a thought for the day kindof thing, don't take it too seriously

I don't like the term "expat", it makes me think of overly privileged colonial types in their safari suits and pith helmets. I like to think of myself as a transient immigrant that got stuck. How do you view yourself here in Switzerland?

The author of that article has missed a pretty fundamental linguistic aspect, that from the perspective of most native speakers of English there's a clear difference between the ex- and im- prefixes.

The silly sod's just overthinking things. Edward Said wrote a lot of rubbish too.

At least in German the difference between Emigrant (getting out) and Immigrant is perfectly clear.

BUT English speaking people arriving in Switzerland to stay for more than 3 months are IMMIGRANTS here -- and this is law

I agree with one comment on article's page that immigrants migrate out of necessity, while expats do it by choice.

Re: Expat vs. Immigrant

Let's say, a shy Swiss college girl conducting a survey on expats. (Not that it's likely), but she thinks of approaching a random stranger in a Starbucks cafe full of "auslanders". There's a african american person (possibly the CEO of Credit Suisse), a few Turkish/ middle eastern guys wearing loads of jewelry, an Indian family (possibly CEO of Microsoft) with 4-8 children, and the Swedish youTuber pewdiepie with his Italian girlfriend who has black hair. In this highly imaginary, yet somewhat likely, scenario, the shy Swiss college girl will probably directly head to pewdiepie.

It's not about the $$$, it's the prejudice about who has the $$$ and who is at the bottom of the socio-economic pyramid. And, that's why tourist expat Oprah and her billion $$$ couldn't buy a decent purse in Zurich.

I haven't even moved to Zurich yet, but just the fact that people are discussing such aspects of Zurich social life makes me cringe and reconsider my decisions. In Netherlands (not my country, by the way), even these thoughts would be unnecessary.

That said - such discussions are actually a positive sign. Admittance that problem exists is halfway progress towards the solution. I'm glad that nobody's saying "we don't have racism in Switzerland".

Re: Expat vs. Immigrant

I did a minimal amount of digging (I clicked on a link) and can only conclude that the Guardian is just trolling: the author is a no-name blogger from Africa; and the photograph used to illustrate the article is clearly intended to be provocative.

It merely serves to confirm my belief that the Guardian is just the posh people's Daily Mail.

Jim Hacker: Don't tell me about the Press. I know *exactly* who reads the papers. The Daily Mirror is read by the people who think they run the country. The Guardian is read by people who think they *ought* to run the country. The Times is read by the people who actually *do* run the country. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by people who *own* the country. The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by *another* country. The Daily Telegraph is read by the people who think it is.

Sir Humphrey: Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?

Bernard Woolley: Sun readers don't care *who* runs the country - as long as she's got big tits.
