Impress Swiss who speak good English with...

..the question...did you study in Bournemouth?

I was talking to a Swiss friend of mine about this lovely coastal town, apparantly it's like a mini Switzerland in the summer these days (she says) because many go to language schools there...

I am actually from a town about an hour away but I always like to say proudly 'I'm originally from the area'... ...I also do understand why they really enjoy their time there, most Swiss say that. there you go.

..or Brighton. Most Swiss I've met attended English schools in one of these two towns.

Re: Impress Swiss who speak good English with...

There's a Swiss lady who works in our local Landi.

I once commented on her excellent English.

She remarked that she learnt it over a week in Bournmouth some twenty years before.

Is there a Swiss equivalent of Bournmouth?

I really meant - a Swiss equivalent which would allow me to become fluent in one week

The Swiss don't become fluent in a week. They typically go to Bournemouth at the age of about 16, after already studying English for a few years in school.

Im from Boscombe (Bos Vegas/Bos Angeles) in the centre of Bournemouth and can assure you that it is absolutely nothing like Switzerland.

„A gifted person ought to learn English in thirty hours, French in thirty days, and German in thirty years.“ -- Mark Twain

Swiss German may be a bit easier because of simpler grammar.

That may be true today, but decades ago, most of the youngster who went to England to learn English knew zilch beforehand. English usually was not even a subject in secondary school.
