Re: It is ........................... Snowing

They have been kept indoors all winter and only let out a couple of weeks ago- and have been 'boiling' outside - so a bit of a thermal shock for them. They are Simmenthal types and do not have a thick coat at all.

Winter has ended long ago, THIS is summer 2012 !
As there are only two seasons in Switzerland, namely winter and April, and if winter is over, then it must be April already.

April will continue until around November, when it changes back to winter.

Re: It is ........................... Snowing

Simmental cattle are quite resistant to cool temperatures, as is the Swiss Brown. The Simmental was bred for alpine pastures.

It is a common city dweller belief that all farm animals should be brought in at night. I have often gone by fields and seen large lumps of snow in an otherwise flat field only to watch them rise and shake themselves off, no worse for the wear.

Beautiful weather today, even for the bugs in Zürich Oerlikon.

Of course - no townie me, I can assure you. Those cows were inside all winter and have not grown any insulating hair. They were out in high eat the previous week. The problem with the other day is that they had been battered by freezing rain and wind all day - and then when night fell, heavy snow in freezing/driving wind- not a good idea to choose THAT night to leave them out overnight for the first time. This is what happens when the farm workers (mostly from far away- lonely and very poorly paid) get *issed.

After a horrible day yesterday, it is now warm, sunny and not a puff of wind- maybe winter is over?????????????

We can but hope. This time yesterday I was enjoying the baking hot sun in Bratislava, and I came back to mediocre weather here. Bloody typical that the only days when the weather is hot and fantastic are days when you have to move house.

Don't let it get you down, sometimes it works the other way 'round. Like last year - I jetted to South America to escape a dreary end of a rainy July, came back to Switzerland in August ..... and it turned out to be SUMMER!!!!

Never mind my other comment in another thread that there are only two seasons in Switzerland.

I also spent a lot of time in Vienna in the last couple of weeks - it's frequently 10-15° warmer than Zurich and usually much sunnier.

I thought you were going to .. Vienna!

For perfect moving house weather, you need one boiling day and one with pouring rain

Mind you, when we moved from the UK, it was snowing heavily and the lorry was unable to back all the way round the bend to our house - everything had to be carried 200m up hill- and we had to help as they would have never made it in time before dark otherwise. Then the men said they were going to sleep in the lorry and leave the next morning. It was minus 15- so I couldn't really leave them like that- we made prepared some mattresses on the floor with warm duvets- and took them to a local restau for dinner - and got stuff for breakfast for them. Better than finding them frozen to death the next morning!

Extra points when the pouring rain day is the day of the actual move so that your stuff gets wet and the boiling day is when you are stuck indoors to unpack

I agree - cows are comfortable in very cold weather (-20C) or dry snow, but become miserable in near freezing rain.

We had our loading day on a freezing cold, clear day. that was ok. Unloading was pouring down rain-snow-rain. Wind. Whoosh. Blech.

Unpacking. Well, that's neverending.
