Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

Hey Daithi, I think I've found a solution to your problem:

PM me your address, and it will be in the post first thing Monday morning... or you could pick it up at the next Rapperswil Ploughman's Lunch (missed you at the last one).

AbFab

Had no intention of being condescending, I was merely pointing out that this topic is no more or less dull than many others on here and that there are some on this particular thread who, for people who claim this is of no interest to them, have made many posts.

Dougal, that's quite funny actually!

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

slightly off the point, when i drive from geneva to zurich i lose signal on it very quickly.

listenign the travel etc i always assumed it was just for the geneva region. i assume this is incorrect but i can seem to get it anywhere else?

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

Monkeynut

It's remit is to be a national station but it only broadcasts on FM in Geneva. the signal is so weak that you lose it in the mountains above Geneva and on the plain you lose it around Lausanne.

Not sure about anyone else but I mostly like to listen to the radio in my car so this rules out a very large majority of the potential audience.

For your info it is available on DAB and online, no use to you as you drive to Zurich though.

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

And it also makes the continuous traffic reports from Zurich, Basel, Lugano et al fairly pointless.

Actually, WRS, is a very low power station. It is also FM so once you get mountains between you and Geneva, it is more or less all over.

EDIT: Sorry, Daithi, I posted before I read.

However, if you have a streaming radio device, like a smart phone, you could listen to WRS DAB, whilst you drove across Switzerland. Of course it could get pretty expensive if you are on a pay as you go Data Plan.

Just a thought.

Brian.

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

The listening by DAB on a phone is a good suggestion.

When WRS became WRS it needed to shift its content focus to one with national interest and relevance. WRG (the predecessor) was Geneva-centric..of course..given its name. Buying a signal in Zurich is the logical next step, but such things would fall into the bureaucratic utopia which is Switzerland (and all EU members.)

Such signal purchases or swaps are a little easier in the States so long as there are private buyers and sellers, but any situation with the FCC involved creates a headache. I assume such hurdles have to be overcome (or another station gives up its signal in Zurich) for expansion to take place.

There was supposed to be a huge DAB push in the country...but people are still holding their breath on that one.

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

WRS is availble nationwide on DAB+ (not DAB). I have DAB (not DAB+) in my car, so they might as well keep their traffic reports to Geneva only...

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

I can't even get the signal in central Lausanne. Driving through St Francois there is no signal at all. Down by the lake the signal is better. I find this the most frustrating thing about the change from WRG to WRS.

Other than that, I haven't noticed a lot of difference in the quality of the programming. Although I probably listen for less than an hour each day.

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

It does appear the line-up is changing. Conor Lennon--who I have understood as taking a more focused newsman role, as opposed to the host of a potpourri news magazine--will take over the morning program. This comes with the development of three other programs. Likewise, a reply to a previously mentioned group of Facebookers affirmed WRS does not pay for the BBC feed, and is thus irrelevant to funding concerns.

I am guessing funding and resources are going toward refining the current local programming, and further expansion and strategic hardware upgrades will follow.

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

Mark Butcher sounding great in his new timeslot on WRS - 10am thru 2pm. This is how the station should sound. Good music, good fun, tight intro's and easy to listen to. I go elsewhere for my news and don't always want the serious take on Switzerland. My life and job are serious enough as they are, so I'm happy to hear Mark getting back to what I used to really enjoy about WRG. Lighten up WRS and stop trying so hard. Work out who you are and do it! I hate hearing the same rehashed packages every hour at breakfast. Be nice to hear more of Laura and Hansina and some weekend programs.

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

Yes I'm enjoying the changes, after all a change is as good as a rest.

I think that the Lennon/Butcher swap makes sense and Butchers new format is attempting to involve the audience more which was one of my bugbears all along.

Just need to address the huge hole in the schedule ie. evenings and weekends*

Who said Facebook groups were a waste of time?

Re: WRS - Swiss based English language radio station

Starting yesterday, WRS introduced a number of new programs to their schedule, and it seems they'll have a weekend host now as well!

http://worldradio.ch/wrs/news/switze...ws.shtml?20673

The new full schedule doesn't seem to be on the website yet, but after clicking around a bit I found that if you go to the "Programmes" menu, and click on each radio service producing the new shows (NPR, PRI, APM, etc), you'll find a list of the shows from that service with the day and time it airs on WRS.

(If you go to the full programme list "Programmes --> All Programmes" the show name takes you to the show's website.)

That sounds fantastic.
Too bad I am leaving Switzerland forever. My flight goes out today.

Oh, well, I will be able to listen to NPR first hand in 24 hours.
