Is Basel utterly lame or is it just me?

After 6 years in Basel I am looking to leave because it seems so fricking dull, I just want to check before I possibly defect to Zurich or Lausanne.....did I miss a trick? Is there a fantastic side to the city and a rampant sparkling social life that I have somehow missed? And if so, where on earth is it?

Er... yeah?

This is happening next Thursday.

Introduce yourself to practically anyone, when you get there- even the guy at the door. I am sure there will end up being some interesting people to talk to.

Basel, just like any place, is what you make it.
There seems to be a something happening every night on the EF calender..
http://www.englishforum.ch/calendar.php?c=1

Zurich is full of weird people too. Just check the forum- all the people on here, that are living there.

I survived 6 years as i travel extensively for work so spent often months away and had boyfriends in different parts of Switzerland so I left Basel as much as I could, but I want to be open minded and give it a fair chance now before I make the decision to leave or not. Most of my friends have gradually defected to Zurich but I am absolutely open to discover Basel and meet new people and try new things

Comedy club thurs eve sounds great, thank you, I had no idea and I sure could use a laugh right now

What are you interested in? I love all the things on offer in Basel - sport and culture. I have also been told that there is a vibrant night life, seven nights a week (past my bedtime though.)

Basel also has the advantage of the thre borders, an easy to negotiate airport, small enough to get around easily and quickly, but with all the facillites of a big city.

You could organise a social event you know.

We have many members in BS and BL, not to mention those from beyond who wouldn´t mind taking a trip to check out the gathering.

Simple events - having a beer at the local brewery, shopping in Konstanz or visiting Strasbourg etc. - these have all materialised between members.

I'm going to Konstanz tomorrow ( Sat 21.04 )... anyone wants to join?

My suggestion: Try to meet people via couchsurfing. Go to their activities and try a few of their weekly meetings to get an idea of the sort of crowd it is.
Best of luck!

yes it is duller than dishwater. so dull that i gave up a 10 minute walk to work to commute 1.5 hours from zurich to basel.

people seem nice and friendly, but still. yawn.

don't get your hopes up though: zurich was still voted 2nd most boring city in europe - though probably it should have been 3rd after luxembourg and brussels.

Well, I am a very regular Basel CS host, but admit I am generally bored at the local meetings. eg: the person who goes, then sit there, nose buried into their mobile phone, instead of actually talking to anyone; the people who seem to use it totally as a dating group, also ignoring others, the occassional older guy who seems to have the one goal of checking out young chicks..... no obvious interest in the concepts of CS, apart from using it as cheap accomodationwhen they are going away themsleves ..... ( there ARE exceptions)

Better for meeting people, have a look at the "Meetup" website which offers all sorts of activities with generally, more proactive people, throughout Switzerland ( and elsewhere.)

As well as the EF events, of course.

From two of your posts

Quote:

It's odd, because they are the sort of things that people who think Basel is boring DON'T like to do. They want NYC or London or Tokyo city life crammed in here. I was like that when I first arrived.

Hiking - loads. Not often around Basel though, but all over Switzerland. Search for the Zurich Hiking Group on meetup.com - you don't need to be in Zurich to Join I spent all day yesterday on one of their hikesalong the Jura trail.

Winter sports - well, there's no skiing in the centre of Basel that's for sure. But a train will take you to somewhere you can ski.

Meeting for drinks - happens pretty regularly; once you have some friends (after 6 years you don't have any?) then it'll happen. They're arranged on here, on Facebook and just people calling each other.

Dinner - do you cook? Restaurants in basel are crap, can't argue against that. Luckily one can cycle to St Louis in 15 minutes, the main part of Weil an Rhein in 25, and Loerrach in 40.

Sitting by the Rine with a BBQ. Well, Basel's pretty good for that what with it having the Rhine running through it, places to BBQ, and loads of people out there having a BBQ.

Cyling - yep. Lots. I cycled to Colmar on Thursday (for food and wine!) and there are often people arranging long and short cycling trips.

Dancing - I can't and don't dance. There are people here who go to Salsa and others.

Basically, everything you want to do seems to be very well catered for here in Basel. It appears that the problem is that you don't want to do these things alone. Get some friends and all your problems will be solved!

Unless your friend is Phil_MCR who prefers to drive or sit on the train all day for the chance to live in a city with twice as many crap restaurants as Basel
