Re: What makes your Swiss town famous?

Lausanne is the smallest city in the world to have a metro system.

Lausanne Cathedral maintains the night watchman tradition (you can hear him making his announcements from the cathedral tower on the hour every hour between 10pm and 2am. Actually, I think Lausanne may be the only place in the world that still does this).

They certainly did back in 2004 if I remember correctly - plus the view from the watchmans apartment (which by itself is very beautiful/cozy) is rather nice!

Chexbres - the best views of Lake Geneva, and therefore is nicknamed "Balcon du Léman" in French.

he does. actually a good friend of ours was the 'guet' or night watchman for about 10 years. i believe the hours go from 9 to 3 but i'm not positive- they'll walk around the tower each hour. from what our friend explained there was a fire years ago and they decided to bring back the guet (pronounced gay) and now it is a staple of lausanne.

Brugg!!

Somebody forgot to burn it down

Biel-Bienne.
Swatch, Omega and Rolex are made here.
There is also the biggest sports school in Switzerland the Swiss Sports School.
That all the road names are marked in German and French.

It's a great tradition! Our visitors find it intriguing too.

The first night watchman announcement is definitely at 10pm and not at 9pm (I regularly walk the dog around Lausanne, and we pass the Cathedral a lot in the evenings.) The lastest one I have heard is the 2am one, so not sure if that is the final one or if there's one at 3am.

It is Kirschtorte as it contains Kirsch Just as a Kafi Schnaps contains some drops of coffee

Kirschtorte is one of the best desserts invented!

I was introduced to it by a former professor who came to visit (Swiss, but from the US).

Plan to try and make it sometime (I have the recipe).
