Anything going on for 4th of July?

Hey folks! So this will be my 2nd July 4th living here. It's always been one of my favorite holidays, and last year was a big let down. We tried to have a get together at the lake but about 4 people showed up. (Ok, that's a bit of an exaggeration, and to be fair, a lot of friends were out of town.) But it would be nice if there was something "official" we could go to. My (Swiss) husband said maybe there'd be something going on in Zurich? I've tried to do a little google research of the various American/International clubs in Switzerland, but so far have come up empty handed. I'll keep looking, but I just figured I'd ask to see if anyone knows of anything that might be fun. You know, BBQ, Fireworks, Country Music? Wishing big here, I know!

Re: Anything going on for 4th of July?

If you want fireworks I would suggest hopping on a flight back to the states! Not sure they would be celebrating 4th of July in Switzerland any more than they would celebrate August 1 in the US...

Re: Anything going on for 4th of July?

The American International Club used to sponsor a big 04July event in Geneva, complete with a massive fireworks show at the end but they've not done if for a few years.

Re: Anything going on for 4th of July?

I just "liked" their page, and also the Am. living Abroad Club on Facebook. In case there was any chatter about the 4th. But they both seem to be more focused on an older generation. And very business and/or political based. I just want a fun group or something.

ETA: Just found this, but it's members only. Sadface.

.. finances I suppose but as memory serves it also got a bit crazy the last few years, and I hate to say this but it was fewer and few Americans and more ( shock horror ) frenchies.

if you do find anything please post it here.

I'm impressed that they would organize fireworks and all! I stand corrected...

Hmm, well maybe that expains why they made it members only. Not to say that non-Americans can't go, but you have to be a guest of a member. Hmmm, anyone a member here??!

Will post if I find anything else.

Re: Anything going on for 4th of July?

p.s... there was one year, this may have in fact been the last year
There was a marching band on the football field at the bout du monde, and the marching band couldnt see it but all the spectators could... a big storm coming off the Saleve ( nearby mountain )
the storm hit, cue the wind, the band started running, torrential rain, cue the thunder and lighting, the lighting ignited fireworks.

the place was like a war scene

ahhhh , good time that.

This got me thinking...

Do any Brits in the Zurich area celebrate the 5th of November, with a Guy Fawkes, bonfire and fireworks?

Re: Anything going on for 4th of July?

we've booked our flights back to the USofA, just in time to catch the fireworks on the 4th. and of course we'll be back here in time to catch the fireworks on August 1.

on Guy Fawkes Day I stroll around Zurich with a banjo, singing "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy".
