| | Where to sell a ring?
Hi all,
I have a ring to sell that is 18 karat white gold, 18 brilliants (diamonds) 2.70 - 2.85. Does anyone knows where to go in Zurich to sell it for a decent price? How good is Switzerland in that since I travel a lot and I would be able to sell it somewhere else.
Thx,
Cheers

First get it valued by a jeweller, then sell it on E-Bay using a reserve price.

maybe its just me but arent more and more people suffering from a lack of common sense?
you want to sell a ring - go to a jeweler, if you dont trust the price they give you go to another, its not rocket science really is it, or maybe for some it is.
i really do wonder how people manage to dress or remember to breathe

I am sure there are jewelers that are fair and trustworthy, but also the opposite. I really hope I do not explain more explicitly why actually I have asked this question, but if so, please let me know.
Have a nice day.

Like I said before him, go to a jeweler and ask and go to an other one and one other one. With 2-3 different jewelers, you'll have a good idea of the asking price. You can also look at the value of the stones if any and the weight of the ring with the gold market values.
So you'll know if the price they told you is more or less right,
It isn't rocket science, really.

Guys,
Maybe what is obvious to you is not to me because I have no clue about any of this. Maybe you have to know something/someone. I do not know. Its not a rocket science, I agree, but this thing should worth a lot, it is not mine (I am just helping), its big, its my first time, I am just being careful.
Thx for you opinions.
Cheers

The ring was bought about 35 years ago for a sizeable sum (I don't know how much - but I should think for about CHF 2000+ considering the circumstances). All the three jewellers that I went to said they weren't interested in the diamonds, it would be too much work to remove them, recut them and re-use them. They all offered me the price of the gold alone. So I put the ring back in its box.
So much for diamonds being 'a girl's best friend' and we forget how many millions of unused diamonds are sitting in the vaults of South African mining corporations - not being put onto the market in order to keep the selling prices high.

I went back for vacation and went to the jeweler who made my ring. He bought it back for the value of the diamond.
I don't sell any of my gold in europe, I always wait when I go to Istanbul.

Go to the Uhrenbörse in Zurich on the 21st of October at the Volkshaus.
While most of the dealers are selling watches and parts (as you would expect), there are a good number with diamonds and while many of those are only interested in selling, some might be interested in your ring.
As far as "take it to a jeweler and sell it" that's kind of like saying I could take my spare gasoline to Aral and ask them for a price. Most jewelers are in the business of selling to, not buying from, the public. | This user groans at for this post: | |

If it has good diamonds and it's a question you not wearing it as a ring, maybe you could want to turn it into something else. I do know a jeweler who might help. He probably wouldn't be interested in buying it, but could design something new.
