Re: fat bum

I started getting fat about 28-30. I saw it happening but did nothing about it. Before that i was always in reasonable shape, and after seeing pictures of myself when i was 18 coupled with comments about my beer-belly from my friends i decided to do something about it.

My stats:

Age 18-28:
Weight = 70kg
Body Fat = 15%
Diet = eat and drink everything

Age 28-30:
Weight = 90kgs
Body Fat = 30%
Diet = eat and drink everything

After joining the rugby club:
Weight = 80kgs
Body Fat = 25%
Diet = eat and drink everything!

After joining the gym (and still playing rugby):
Weight = 75kgs
Body Fat = 15%
Diet = 2700calories per day, almost clean diet (not including beer once a week during rugby season)

After seeing the results (in a matter on months), I decided to go hardcore:
Weight = 85kgs
Body Fat = 12%
Diet = 4700 calories per day, extreme clean diet

Currently i am back to 80kgs with 15% body fat as i am injured and have not been able to do rugby or gym........i also stoped my extreme diet.

I will be back to the gym in the next 10 days and i will get back on track to my goal of 90-95kgs with 10% body fat.

Please note that i am the most lazy git you will ever meet. Once you get off your ass and do something about it, it becomes routine and easy to maintain. Yes there are days when i dont feel like eating 10 tonnes of brown rice or drinking another bloody protein shake, but i can see the transformation of my body and it makes it all worth while.

cheers
SC

Just to add, when you are on an extreme diet like me, there is zero desire for snacks or cakes.

Has anyone seen Secret Eaters on Ch4?

It's so interesting to see how people have a skewed perception of how much they eat in a day. Even when they were told to keep a food diary, they found that the perceived intake was often under the recommended amount for adults (one 17st woman stated that she was only eating 1600 calories a day) but when they set up cameras in their home, which the participants knew about, and followed them with private investigators, which they didn't know about, people were found to eat massive amounts without realising it.

The 1600 calorie per day woman was actually eating almost 5000 calories in a day through snacking and other "mindless" eating.

The best was a guy who went to the gym for a workout burning 600 calories then came home via 3 pints of lager, nuts and crisps in the pub then made himself peanut butter on toast and a Mars Bar chaser.

The good thing was when they were aware of what they were doing they were able to control it and almost all of them had lost significant amounts of weight 10 weeks later.
Actually, it is for exactly this reason that I "limit" myself by (usually) not having large bags of chips (er, crisps to ya'll) or sacks of "fun size" candy bars or whatever in the house. If I want it, I either have to bake it myself or go down to the corner store and buy it.

The exception to this is when hubby has paired days off or is on vacation - if I don't have snacks in the house, he'll prowl through things in the cupboard which are planned for meals. To combat this though, I have some kiddie sized plastic bowls which I use as a gauge for how much I can have.

I know it's not a perfect solution, but it is an improvement over what used to happen, which was to open a packet of cookies (or chips) and then realize two hours later that I'd eaten half of the 1lb package.

The most interesting thing about this post is not the content of the post but who has "Thanked" Sandgrounder for it.

It may be that they haven't seen it but why would an over-weight person not like this post? It's not mocking in any way and it confirms what a study at a prestigious University discovered many years ago.

So people, what don't you like about the post and how does it offend?
My apologies good sir. Wednesday I had time to spend visiting and revisiting the forum, today is laundry day and I'm busily sweating and hauling my tail along with multiple loads of laundry up and down several flights of stairs. (Ahh, the joys of "dachwonung ohne lift" in the summer time )

Had time now though, so post is duly "thanked" and commented upon.

Darlings, at size 0-4, of course you can wear a potato sack if you want to and still look great Heck, when i was size 4, I went to gym in shorts and a sports bra, didn't even need any clothes.
It's completely irrelevant what ones wears to the gym, at any weight. Who cares for that and how well ones look. Not loooking perfect just does not cut it as an excuse when you should be doing something about yourself.

The self confidence should have nothing to do with how one looks in whatever clothing, it's what will push you through your plan when you don't feel like it no mo. Who cares for clothes and comfort. Stuff the pamper yourself culture. Ick.

Self confidence starts with the devine decision to do something about onself. Whatever it is, whatever the results are. Irrespective of what one looks like in the mirror.

Respek. I have huge for who decide to change this.

Re: fat bum

I seem to have left this thread on ignore after my flounce the other day. Oh well. And I missed what, like 4 pages of stuff.....

in no particular order...

I really believe that what you eat matters for some people. I probably cut 400, 500 calories off my day because I don't eat bread, potatoes, desserts, either - other than a piece of dark chocolate. And when I have a few days where I eat bread for example, I pay for it. Not in weight, but in feeling miserable - sluggish, cranky, depressed.

When we first moved here, I didn't see a lot of fat people. In Winti, I see quite a few, now.

And yes, I think that snacking has a cascade effect. If you don't eat, sometimes you forget about it. For some people, though, endless nibbling is like having an all day meal. So perhaps measured snacking is the way to go.

I've been reading up on insulin resistance. This is often a precursor to diabetes. It's possible that weight gain is a sign of insulin resistance, setting up a feedback loop. Imagine this - you are sensitive to carbs, carbohydrates cause your insulin to go up (this would be like having fair skin). So you eat a lot of carbs, insulin goes up, you gain weight, insulin resistant, eat carbs, insulin goes up, gain weight. But if you knew you were likely to develop insulin resistance, maybe you'd eat differently - like wearing sunscreen. So yes, genetics plays a role, but it's not an excuse. And, because diets have changed significantly - the number of carb heavy foods, processed foods, then these people are more likely to gain weight. So yes, they are eating more, they're more sedentary, but the standard diet is also hitting them where it hurts the most.

Finally, you can always become healthier, you may not become thin. Nothing wrong with setting goals to be healthier, even to loose weight, but I think it's always better to concentrate on health.

If a fat person is on the beach, or out walking, or in your gym, you never know what that person's doing. Maybe he or she is exercising and trying to be healthy, maybe not. But it's really not your business. Any more than if the skinny person is on the beach, walking or in your gym. But the point is, these are people, not objects of your amusement and derision.

There's a big difference between perfection and conspicuousness. I want people to just ignore me so I can get my workout done. Blinders, so I can ignore what's around me.

And I think you're wrong about comfort. If I'm working out, I want to be able to move unobstructed, and for a long enough time to be effective - thus, comfortable clothes and good shoes, or barefoot.

I like the idea of self-efficacy rather than confidence. The perception that you can meet a goal. People who set down a goal and work out a plan are generally more successful than people who just think about being able to do it.

I teach some fitness classes and yes, apparently it matters. While I have not actually heard any complaints yet about me personally, some fellow instructors of mine have. Like that the shirt was not ironed. And pants were too tight. Or that he was wearing Adi sneakers with Nike bottoms. (Yes, really. I was as well).

Sorry for offtopic, this is of course mostly vanity, does not keep one from working out and different from not actually being able to find clothes in your size.

Ullainga, why do you care? If someone was complaining about me mixing brands or having a wrinkled top, I wouldn't give it a second thought. I'm just curious as to why it's important to you, genuinely.

the people complaining are the customers of the gym and if you want to keep the classes, you want to keep the customers happy(and gym manager, who hopefully will of course dismiss such comments, but not always. The more posh the place is, the more likely you will have to aim to please in any way possible). Of course it shouldn't really matter.

Thanks for the explanation, I completely understand your reasons for caring now! What a bunch of pretentious wankers.
