Re: Greatest finding in Switzerland

The mobility freedom with the GA, well behaved pets especially in public, the Heimat-Billet for National Day to go back "home", the delicious Carac are among the few that comes to mind right now.

I was recently turned on to Panache. I don't think it's originally Swiss (I assume it's French, by the name), but I had never heard of it -- or had it -- before here. It's nice and refreshing. Yum.

Now I just have to find some good, authentic Absinthe.
Panache is just what the English call shandy (beer and lemonade mix). Been around for years.

For absinthe, you could try this place near Neuchâtel.

Ah, okay. I guess it never got big in the States... though I wouldn't be surprised if it is now.

That Switzerland has the most civil society in the world, or at least amongst any of the many countries I have visited - see for example (how I see Zug):

Re: Greatest finding in Switzerland

I'd have to say just enjoying the many beautiful parks in Lausanne. In Texas, where we lived before, it was always too hot to go out. I love taking my son out for a stroll and just enjoying the scenery and the amazing weather.

The photo below was taken at Parc de Valency last fall.

Even better is the variety of shandies you can get in a pub..... depending on what type of beer used, bitter, mild, etc. (do not use Guinness)!
The proportions vary too, anything from 30-70% beer, and there's something called 'bitter-top' which an almost full pint of bitter with a splash of lemonade.

I so agree that shandy is a more refreshing drink in summer than beer, and have spent ages finding exactly the right sized glasses to take one 33cl bottle of beer and half a can of lemonade.

[QUOTE=Anjela;1597524] (do not use Guinness)!

Having worked in many UK pubs - it is possible and indeed asked for Guiness Shandy - you just need to be very careful about making it. If using a draft Guiness then lemonde needs to go in first, then the Guiness (often the other way with bitter/lager shandy). Sometimes Guiness shandy requested with a dash of black-currant too.

I didn't mean it didn't exist, just that it's disgusting.... a more correct version would be guinness and champagne. Black Velvet.

Before anyone says anything, this is not a version of cheese on toast!! Käseschnitte is the best - thick white bread soaked in white wine and a dash of Kirsch, covered in good quality ham; then thinly sliced tomatoes (or mushrooms), five pieces of Raclett cheese, loads of pepper. Bake in the oven until the cheese is slightly crispy on top. The fried egg (optional) tops it off perfectly. Yummo!

Upside: perfect comfort food
Downside: it's a calorie bomb!
