The Swiss "grass" cutting... and the sidewalk

So, now being here for 8 months, something has perplexed me quite a bit.

When I moved here everything seemed normal, but as the warmer weather came up, it became clear pretty quick that the grass was not getting cut on the sidewalks. I was happy to see the wild flowers left alone on the sidewalks and I really enjoyed seeing this.

Then, it started to get ugly about a month ago when they were dying off.

So, the other day, the city came through and cut the "grass"... but not all of if. It seems they thought it would be nice (I thought it funny) to keep one piece of grass. Was it for the masses to see, or, is someone in need of therapeutic treatment and a card carrying member?

How funny! That is a strange sight, indeed! Looks like a definite case of selective pruning.

I suddenly have several similar volunteers cropping up in the garden, mostly under the birdfeeder. Checked the birdseed mix and yep, the 'Freilandvögel Futtermix' contains Hanfsamen.

(They all get weeded out and destroyed, as the plant is mildly toxic to dogs. Much to the neighbor's teenage son's dismay. )
