Renting a violin near Stafa 8712

Hi All,

I need to rent a violin for my daughter for the start of the next academic year, August 2012.

Does anybody have any experience of hiring a violin around this area? Recommendations of a good shop would be helpful. Also, is there anything special I need to think about. I am assuming the shop would tell me the correct size for my child......

Thanks for your tips.

Henryviii

Re: Renting a violin near Stafa 8712

I have some professional musicians in the family whose kids are also learning instruments in the violin family. My daughter (1st grade) studied a little and was able to borrow from a close relative, but if she hadn't we would have rented from Musik Hug in Zurich. They are one of the older and most well respected music instrument shops in the area, and from what I remember the prices for rental were reasonable ( for Switzerland, that is). Hope this helps.

It depends a little on what you want to spend, but you might consider buying an inexpensive instrument rather than renting one -- have a look at my posts on this thread and this thread to see my experience with an inexpensive Chinese instrument purchased from a reputable seller on eBay.

How old is your daughter, and how tall is she? Her teacher should help her find the right size, but broadly speaking it should reach from her neck to the base of her wrist with her arm fully extended.

Have a look at this size chart.

Thanks for the response. Yes I want to rent. I did consider buying from the UK as know it would be possible to buy good quality at a reasonable price 100-200 GBP depending on budget. However I am not convinced the quality for comparative price would be equal in CH.
Also, I have heard many stories where it is the labour on an instrument that is expensive so it is better to take a local rental. Then if something is faulty (bridge setting, strings etc) you can take it back under guarantee.

The link to the sizing info was very helpful. Thank you.

I guess I am really interested to learn if anyone knows of a good music shop outside of Zurich city.

Ok, if you really want local, in Staefa, try Hess geigenbau. He is a relatively young Instrument maker who also rents. A friend of mine had a violin repair done there and was quite pleased. I only bought a piece of wood from him and found him pleasant to deal with, which is not necessarily the case with specialists of any kind here in CH.

If you can travel to Konstanz I can recommend a great music store www.ebert.de in the town center. I bought my daughter's violin there and the selection and quality/ price ratio was IMO better than in the UK. They are also very helpful and will advise on the appropriate size. My concern about renting was the liklihood of the instrument getting damagec, also I found the prices in my local branch of Music Hug very high.
