Re: How much did it cost you to get your drivers license?

Russkov, you mention the 2 days training you have to take post test, do you know is it 3 years you have to do this or 1 year? I had a UK license prior to moving but only for 10 months - so they told me the training was required. Though I also waiting the full year before transferring it!

Just I move to France next year so its a lot of trouble when I need to change it again!

It was within 3 years for new licenses. Might be shorter for transferred licenses, do check.

Re: How much did it cost you to get your drivers license?

Hmmm, my wife passed her test abroad and they gave her a provisional six month license for that country which would normally be upgraded to a full one on the application at six months. She did the lessons and test there because it would be a lot, lot easier and in English...

We moved back to Switzerland and that license expired about 3 months after moving back, so we didnt have the usual year grace period. The authorities have rightly said that it is not valid anymore. She now has to go through the whole rigamarole of passing the test again, this time in German.

Oh, and apparently this is all my fault as I exchanged my license in time...

Hmm, wow. I see numbers flying all over the place. Looks like price really depends if you gotta take them classes or whatever. Eesh!, dodged that bullet.

I have a US WA State Driver License

1: Eye exam 12 CHF
2: Application: 11 CHF
3: Processing: 200 CHF

So, 223 CHF in Graubunden (Chur) to convert it.

My brother has everyone beat. Got his license at an in-school driving class in the States when he was 16 after two days of driving around cones at the driving school parking lot in an automatic. Never went on the roads, never touched a manual transmission. It cost like 40 bucks. He got in converted in 2000, a few years before conversion requirements for US licenses became more stringent. I don't think it even cost 100 francs. He now has an unlimited Swiss drivers license (manual AND automatic) and barely spent a dime. Lucky bastard.

Once you become resident in CH you can not obtain a license in your home country, the Swiss authorities will not accept it.
Can anyone provide me with the rules about this, for Canton Zurich, please? Links to the laws, in German, very welcome.
And what - specifically for this context - counts as “resident”?
I’ve searched, but unsuccessfully. Perhaps I just don't know the right searchwords.

I know a young woman with a C permit who will be going on an exchange year abroad and then returning home to Switzerland. Can she get her licence there, during that year, and then, when she gets back, convert her licence to a Swiss one?

And another young woman who has a B permit, and not enough money to take driving lessons here. Can she go on holiday (to her home country or any other) and take lessons each time, and even pass the test there, and then return to Switzerland and convert her licence to a Swiss one? (Yes, true, she doesn’t have the money for a car, either, she knows that, and doesn’t intend to buy one. But she works in a field where having a licence would increase the range of jobs for which she could apply.)

Does anyone have experience with getting the bulk of the lessons abroad (because they’d be cheaper) and then getting some polishing-up-for-Switzerland lessons here, at the end, and then taking the test in Switzerland?

I’d be grateful for any tips. Thanks.

Re: How much did it cost you to get your drivers license?

You can take lessons anywhere, but for the test to be valid, you must be de-registered for at least a year. This true for all cantons, and also for Swiss.

Anything for you my dear

"Im Ausland erworbene Führerausweise werden anerkannt, wenn der Erwerb während eines Aufenthaltes von mindestens 12 zusammenhängenden Monaten im Ausstellerstaat erfolgte und eine entsprechende Bestätigung beigebracht werden kann."

Drivers licenses are regulated by federal law (despite the fact that they're issued by the Kantons), so the rule will be the same everywhere.

The keywords to search for are Strassenverkehrsamt Zürich. The clock starts the moment you receive your first residence permit. Check out the link provided by Urs Max.

I converted mine a year ago. Eye-test, application form, submission at STVA. My Swiss licence arrived in the mailbox a week later, together with the invoice.

Re: How much did it cost you to get your drivers license?

If you have a driver's license which is recognized as being transferable into a Swiss license, then it is relatively cheap.

Most European countries are eligible to covert their licenses into a Swiss, given a 1 year time frame from when you entered the country.

Other licenses from South America or Asia, might require you passing a driving test to see if you have the basic skills to drive on Swiss roads and European roads.
If your confidence is not there then I would recommend you taking a few hours of driving school before officially asking for a Swiss driving license.

From experience, driving in Switzerland is relatively not stressful as they are quite organized and respectful of the rules. In respect, look at the details when driving around: such as stopping in front of a road crossing "zebra" path for pedestrians, try not to take another lane at the last minute as many conserve their lane for the direction they wish to take, etc.

Again, it's very fairly easy going compared to other cities in Europe.

Regards,

EU licences can also be converted later. You are just not allowed to drive with an EU licence after a year. I converted mine 18 months after I moved to CH. Eye check, 60 CHF for the application et voilà

Quite true... I believe you are correct... It's been a while since I did it and I only remembered the 1 year rule for the license from someone...

But you are right about the license plates of the car.... They need to be changed after 1 year or put the ownership under another name based in that European Country... A family relative, perhaps...

No, it has to be exported.

And even if you put it under another name, you can't drive it with non-Swiss plates after a year.

...and the fines are steep. You are most likely to get caught at a border or in a random police control.

I do not think you will see low prices here like in US.

My advice is, use public transport if it is more convenient. You can travel everywhere with that. That's what they want and that's also why the price to get one is very deterrent. It is also more environment friendly.
It's a myth. pt can get you only that far - the rest you walk It is better to have car in CH - you lose less time and won't have to smell strangers during the heat waves

Really?

I have been living here for 3 years now and I genuinely just borrowed my dad's car to bring some of my remaining stuff from back "home" last month as I don't own a car here. I'll return the car in a month or so... are you saying I'll be fined if I'm "caught" driving my dad's car? Sch*****...

Does the fact that I never owned this car change anything?

You can drive it for a few days, several times a year, provided you declare it at the border when entering and leaving, regardless of whose name it's in.

You won`t be fined for driving your dad`s car. You could be fined for importing a car. It is the same in the UK.

Anywhere in Europe, actually, though some countries (Italy, Norway) more than others.
