iPhone 4s as birthday gift

Next week is my son's 13 yearl old birthday. I am going to buy him an iPhone 4s, (he is wanting it for a long time) but he is always losing things. I occasionally got this yahoo news. It is talking about an iPhone app which is anti-theft. That is amazing but i am a bit worried that it is deceptious. Anyone have experience about that or how to get back a stolen iphone?

If you have an iTunes account, you can link the device to the account and can locate it through the iCloud website.

Then I'd give him an Android based phone instead. A lot cheaper to replace, and arguably just as functional (some would argue more so) as an iPhone.

The anti theft stuff is more to do with bricking (making it unusable) the phone remotely rather than recovering the device. You can locate the phone approximately using iCloud, as Paddy has already said, which might help in a lost situation. However, if it's been stolen then the recovery chance is pretty slim anyway.

Persuade one of his other relatives to buy a year (or two) worth of insurance as their birthday present to him
