problem with moving in...

Yikes,
So I made the mistake of booking my flight with an arrival on a Saturday. It says on the FMEL website for Lausanne (a UNIL residency service program) that they do not allow people to pick up their keys except during their hours of operation, which is 8-5 during weekdays.

Do you guys have any recommendations? I've emailed the house manager to see if they'll make a special exception for me but no reply as of yet. I'm gonna call him tomorrow see if that does anything.

Otherwise... I might have to stay at a hostel for the weekend... Any hostels you'd recommend? This is a nightmare since I'm travelling all the way over from Canada and I just wanted to move in peacefully...

Re: problem with moving in...

Two suggestions:

1) See if someone from the university can pick up keys for you (are you coming to work or study ?)

2) Ask them to recommend you a cheap hotel.

It might be cheaper to reschedule your flight than to pay for alternative accommodation....and I'd be worried about theft if you brought all your worldly possessions in your suitcase then stay in some dodgy cheap hotel or hostel.

In the french or italian areas the word 'pension' can mean a cheap/basic hotel or B&B - this one came up on google maps as very close to Lausanne central :
http://www.pension-bienvenue.ch/ - but it's only for women.

Another one:

Thank you.
I'm gonna be a student... I'm hoping to speak with the landlord and see if there's any other person in the apartment (I'm renting a room in it) who can give me the keys. If not... I think you're right. I might just have to take a loss on this and rebook the flight... if it won't cost me over a $100.

Are Swiss hostels really that untrustworthy for traveling with lots of luggage?

I can think of millions of thing that could have been worse than what you said.

Alternatively, I can think of the many opportunities you would have had in that youth hostel for 2 days only (oh my god... 2 days! end of the world!!!):
meeting other youngs students, creating links, seeing advert boards with useful tips, etc... So many things you'll miss because of your over rated fear...

Oh well... You're life is saved now.

I'm really pleased it worked out for you. I know what a hassle it can be when you arrive after a long flight and just want to settle in. Nice landlord. Good luck with your new start.
