Re: Fireworks in Switzerland on 1st of August

Simple answer....everywhere....

If the weather is good, we'll probably go for a vantage point down around the lake where we can see the Uetliberg. That was pretty nice in previous years...

Re: Fireworks in Switzerland on 1st of August

Yeah, there are massive displays over the "city" end of the lake, but also every Gemeinde will have a display and festival of some sort (I think - there may be some who opt for an alternative to fireworks).

Just be aware that there will be groups who use this as an excuse to go out and get drunk, and also there appears to be no regulation of fireworks - you can buy a whole heap of stuff yourself, if you like, and let it off. Just don't make the mistake of drinking to excess and then using fireworks ... saw some guys three years back who did that, one of them forgot how to count to five and almost burned his feet. Luckily his mates were quick-thinking, and threw him into the lake.

Coincidentally, I just happened upon this about 10 mins before reading this thread:

Re: 1st August - Fireworks in Zurich

I on 1st August will be in Oberbipp, a Bernese place in the Solothurnese Prairies, on visit to my sister-in-law, and also in on visit to a place named Hindelbank, but most likely will be back to Zürich fairly early and then, if the weather is nice, will get on to Stadelhofen-Station and to the lake. As in good weather many private people will launch fireworks right around the lake.

Getting a good spot down by the lake on the Seefeld side is probably the best idea. Enge is also a nice area to watch them.

Re: 1st August - Fireworks in Zurich

On 31.07 at 21:45, there will be a grand fireworks display at Rheinfall.

Fire on the Rocks! - Entrance is free, large crowds expected.

All trains on the S33 Bahn line will stop at Schloss Laufen ( as additional stops ).

Re: 1st August - Fireworks in Zurich

Love the official fireworks displays but scared stiff of the knobheads who let off their own fistful of rockets and bangers willy-nilly regardless of who is within range (where do they get those ear-drum bursting airbombs??).

A good spot by the lake on the Seefelf side is your best bet. That is where I'll be. Just hope its good weather and doesn't rain!

You can buy heaps of fireworks pretty much anywhere in the country, especially as it gets closer ...

If you think this is dangerous, though, try New Year's Eve in Rome sometime - bungers thrown under the feet of people wandering along the street, people lighting Roman Candles (oddly appropriate) while holding them in their hands, empty wine bottles casually thrown over shoulders to smash on the cobblestones ... took three days before it was completely cleaned up!

August 1st fireworks

Love the fireworks Aug 1st downtown Zurich. where they are superb.
Pet peeve are my neighbourhood fireworks that people set off up to 2 am in the morning. Some of us have to work the next morning like me.. have to get up at 3;30 am for a 5 am start.. so get no sleep. Any rules against this?

Re: August 1st fireworks

There might be rules but in my experience everything is tolerated around 1 August, incl. 31 July. They let everyone have their day of fun or so. Even setting off fireworks for French national day is very common around here and tolerated.

Seeing as I had to toleate all the noise from Paleo for 6 days including their own fireworks display and Caribana for another few days, one or two days of 1st August I can live with.

There's a lot of penis talk in that sentence!

PS Basel's fireworks are tonight, down by the river.

It depends. Some communes are doing things on 31 July, others on 1 August. If you move around a bit, you can celebrate on both days.

Officially only from 00:01 up to 23:59 on 1st August.

I made the mistake of taking my baby to an official firework display at Murten harbour. On the lake side, what could go wrong?

Behind me during the display, people were setting off small fireworks. At one time we had a spaceship type of flying thing around the pram, it was very hot and could not be pushed away, I was frightened it would crash into the pram. We couldn't move the pram due to the crowd of people around us, many of whom were laughing! Luckily it lasted only about 10 seconds, but we were defenceless.

I find the Swiss have a very cavalier attitude to fireworks. Parents give very young children cheap bangers, which they set off from anytime now until 1st August.

My solution is to visit a church yard overlooking a firework display. The catholic church at Murten is an ideal spot, and the yobbos seem to avoid this place.
