Re: What's The Hottest You've Ever Been?

When we were in Dubai four years ago it reached 50 and there was a sandstorm that lasted for four days - unbearable.

Recently, here in Malta, it reached 46 degrees with 94 percent humidity

Over 50 deg C in the Mojave Desert in California in the late 1990s, although I've also been in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia with a 52 deg C on the airport's met report.

I was probably hottest in my mid-twenties.

Now I'm merely handsome and rugged.

Re: What's The Hottest You've Ever Been?

I worked in Algeria for a couple years - we were routinely working out in the open in 42 to 46 deg C. And almost zero humidity. I remember consuming 7-10 litres of drinking water every day...

Saw 52 deg C once in Oman. They wouldn't let the planes land until after 5 pm cause the tarmac got too soft...

Back days when i used to live in Dubai some times it was reaching 50C
When we left Doha (Qatar) for the last time, we drove home, across Saudi, and through a lot of Europe. Mum & dad drove all night through Saudi, for reasons I can't remember (I was only 10).

Anyway, we stopped for a loo stop at 06:30 in the morning, literally in the middle of the desert. It was 45'c. 1 hour earlier, it was nearer 20'c. 1 hour later than that...frankly we didn't hang around to find out.

All I can remember was the BMW's windows were untouchably hot, but it was almost too-cool inside the car. Dad had to drive slowly to avoid melting the tyres (Calling the AA out to the middle of the Saudi desert wasn't an option). BMW made a good car in the early 80's...I remember dad feeling chuffed with himself at a refuel point, and showing me how 'clean' the engine was burning due to the texture and colour of the soot. No unleaded or cats back then...just good ol' 4 star...

What's The Hottest I've Ever Been?

39.7C with a thermometer in my mouth tucked up in bed.

Why do you want to know?

Re: What's The Hottest You've Ever Been?

Bit of a personal question Edit..Just noticed Mirfield got there first

Seriously,

Probably here in Switzerland in 2003, 34 degrees plus.
How do people survive in temperatures above 40 degrees?

Re: What's The Hottest You've Ever Been?

50C in Cairo. That was the outside temperature. Working in the steam-turbine hall of the power station was an order of magnitude worse, as the station was live.

117F on the road from San Diego to Mexicali; hit me like a brick when I got out to explain to the nice policeman why I was speeding. Even hotter at the power station; combined with constantly switching from the equipment room at 20C to outside at 50C.

A relentless 48C to 50C every single day for a month in Bahrain; extremely dry, hence extremely dangerous. Add 10 bonus degrees for working next to the generator in the power station.

Malyasia, not so warm, 40C or so. But relentless 100% humidity. Throw in a stinking hot power station for added misery.

Re: What's The Hottest You've Ever Been?

Not sure, my sauna thermometre only goes up to 130C..

As for weather, it was 47 degrees in Turkey one year when i was a lot younger and travelling with my parents. Which would not have been that bad, except that mum had decided that ah, let's save money and who needs a hotel with air conditioning anyway.

I do wonder though about the humidity - I know that dry heat is supposed to be nicer, but I always find the same temperature more bearable in humid climate than in dry. What am I doing wrong?

I'd have to say June 2005 flight UA931 from Heathrow to San Francisco seat 1C; sitting and trying to sleep next to Sharon Stone, now THAT was an uncomfortable temprature!

Humidity is a double-edged sword. On my aforementioned trip up the Iran/Iraq border river, we endured about five hours of blistering dry desert heat, where even a slight wind feels like you're standing under a giant hairdryer. You knew you must be sweating like a pig, but the skin was always bone-dry and hot. Not helped, of course, by standing on a steel deck that must have been close to 100C. Then about 2/3 of the way up the river the wind direction, and indeed the surrounding geography, changed, such that it turned much more humid in a very short space of time. Initially this felt like something of a relief from the biting dryness, but then the sweat started to accumulate. Being wet does cool you off slightly through evaporation, but the more humid it is the less effect it has. Ironically in these conditions when there was a breeze it was much nicer, but when there was no air movement it felt like you were unable to breathe.

So really, when it's that hot, either too dry or too humid are both as bad as each other, if different. Ideally something in between, perhaps around 50-60%, with just a light breeze to help evaporate the sweat.
