Re: Things today's kids just don't understand/appreciate

I still well remember when this kind of TVset was one of the few in the quarter as few people had their own TVset. If you turned the knob to the left you had Swiss TV (Zürich Bellerive Seefeld), and if you turned it to the right you had ARD Germany (Köln), the TV station of West Germany

at home we had the Tages Anzeiger in the morning and
Die TAT in the evening, plus at 6am 7am 8am 7pm 8pm the radio news of the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (Radio Beromünster + Radio Sottens + Radio Monte Ceneri)

and even when we at home in 1966 got our own TV set (I was just 16) it of course was black and white

with colours coming
four years later !

When in the 50ies/60ies, something happened in the world you wanted to see with movies in colour, you went to the cinema where they all always had the Wochenschau which means 15 minutes of the weekly world news in colour. Of course produced on Saturday morning and only replaced a week later !

Early British public telephones: remember button A and B ? You could be connected by rattling the receiver bar up and down quickly.
For a 4 you tapped the bar 4 times quickly, then paused, then tapped the next number & paused, and so on,

My father was working for the GPO in west London. MI6 and his group were listening in to a dissident calling the Russian Embassy in London.
Father was not worried they had a hardened communist in London, he was more upset the traitor had not paid for the call!
