I need a Swiss Matriculation Number for my UK car for insurance

Hi all,

Wonder if anyone as some info please.

I have had a quote for car insurance with Clements as plan to bring my UK car back to Switzerland for up to a year only, after that I will take it back to Uk as it would cost a lot of money to convert it/ inspections etc...and its not worth spending that much on a 8-9 year car.

Clements need a Swiss matriculation number. Ive done some research and think this is a number that the boarder customs give you when you arrive in Switzerland. Ive had my car along time so wouldnt need to pay tax.

Am I correct? Does anyone know of a number I can call and comfirm all this? I live in Lausanne.

Thanks for your help.

Isn't a "Swiss matriculation number" actually mean they want the car to be registered in Switzerland with a Swiss number plate?

Hi, my understanding is that you have up to a year to register and apply for swiss number plates which means you can drive it with your UK reg plates during that year. As the process of getting swiss plates involves inspections/converting the car etc which can cost alot of money with an old car which is what Im trying to avoid. It gives us a year to save up to then buy a second hand swiss car . Thats the plan hopefully.

Thanks for your message

Re: I need a Swiss Matriculation Number for my UK car for insurance

it can cost a lot but often does not.....

is your car standard? does it have KMS also shown on the speedo?

if so then all you may have to do is adapt your headlights.

get a set from ebay.de and it may only cost a few hundred euros plus the admin fees ...

sure a lot cheaper than buying another car !

In general it is the Kantonale Strassenverkehrsamt that handles issues like that. (The Strassenverkehrsamt in the Canton you live.) They want to see all your papers, ID, insurance and blaba, and of course your car has to meet the standards here in Switzerland.

Sure you have year to register it, but that's not problem. The problem you are going to face could well be you'll find it difficult to get insurance. Check out the link that Sbrinz left for you.

At the end of the day, sometimes it's just easier to sell ones old car and get new-used one here that is fully compliant, easily insured, etc. There are so many cars for sale and at every price range.

But that's just me. I like to make things easy for myself.

Your 3x3 Matriculation number is on your 13.20 import document.

...you *do have* an import document don't you...?

I know what you mean but I wouldnt get much for my car now and the sad thing is that its in a good condition and has low mileage so thats why I wanted to hang on to it instead of leaving parked up in the UK. We have looked at cars already. We need two cars and thats quite a big expense when we could al least keep my old car for a year and then get another one. Dilemas!!!!

this is great, so if I do decide to keep it here after the year then it sounds like sorting the lights could be cheaper than I was told. My car does have KMS on speedo. Thanks

i did it myself and its not a hassle at all and my car is heavily modified.

never consider buying new lights - always look for second hand.

It is the Stem number they need. You only get that when you take your car to the custom, pay the custom clearance fee. Then you get a 13.20A form which has the Stem Number on it together with your vehicle's identification number.

Hi all, just wanted to reply to say that yes it was a case of going to customs at the swiss border with all my car paperwork/permit, paid a small tax fee and they gave me the Swiss matriculation number I needed, which is on the 13.20A form. So very straight forward and quick. Thanks
