Need help!! Yet another cost of living query for zurich Switzerland(research done)

Hi All,

Let me first introduce myself. I am Asha Nagaraju currently in London UK. My hubby has got an offer to move to Zurich in December 2012. We have a 8 months old baby. The company has told him his net salary would be around 9600 chf per calendar month. Is this a descent salary for us to survive in zurich with a normal life style with no spend thrifts background. I will not be working there as of now. And mainly I would like to know how much of the net salary is gone for the entire expense of the month for a middle class family. I have heard zurich has a very high cost of living. Based on how much average we can save, we would like to take a decision to move to Swiss or not. Please help us out.

Thank you in advance
Asha.

Yes, it seems like a fine salary - I am guessing by 'net', they mean, after taxes and other deductions are taken out? Do you know if they pay on a 13 month or 12 month schedule? Is there a possibility of a bonus?

Yes, Zurich is expensive. But you said you've done some research, so you must know some things? Check out homegate.ch to look at apartments and see how much one you would like would cost you. There are some other threads here with estimates on food and health insurance. Good luck

completely fine - as long as you don't want a luxury apartment you will have no problem with that salary. And be sure to post an introduction when you come with what area you have moved to and info on your little one - there is a very active expat mamas group (actually now groups!) in Zurich so if you aren't working, it will be a great way to get to know people fast and fill up your early days when you might start to miss home.

Good luck with your move!

Re: Need help!! Yet another cost of living query for zurich Switzerland(research done

It is doable. But you will actually need a spend thrift mentality in my view. Kids clothes, kids shoes alone will cost a packet. So look at second hand stuff. Most middle class families in the UK have a car, which will rack up a bit, a few hundred for a lease, 150 pcm garage space, higher servicing costs. I think you can forget saving anything from your salary, but pension contributions will be higher as presumably the salary is more than the UK.

Actually, getting a nice small cosy but central apartment so you don't need a car can sometimes work out a good deal, as can moving somewhere cheaper out of town like Baden, getting more space in the centre, and paying just a little more taxes. Plus in Baden you can shop in Germany easily and save a packet.

You will need to be very cost conscious at the start, then relax as you learn and enjoy lifestyle things here that money can't buy.

am I missing something here? the family is going to make 9600*13 = 120K+ after taxes, and you think they will need to buy second hand clothes for the kids to survive?

There are literally dozens of threads on here with people asking the same question about the same place. You can easily find other people who are looking to ease their mind with the big choice. But I would say, on that salary, you will have a nice life. Maybe you can even go out to eat once a month. But not if you need to get a babysitter, they are expensive...

If this is totally net, then the salary, as there are 13 of these payments, will be in the 160,000 CHF range, right? And you're all saying it's only just possible?

A few weeks ago 120,000 was enough. What kind of inflation is this?

Forget about the official exchange rate; think that 9,600CHF net per month in Zürich is equivalent to £4,800 net in UK & how does that compare with your current salary & standard of living.

More around 170'000 if health insurance is already deduced from the net.

To the original poster: make sure you check out the web site below - it gives you a pretty accurate estimation of what your monthly brut vs net will be.

www.lohncomputer.ch

Sometimes employers quote 'net' figures which are not the take home figures to make the salary look more attractive.

There are zillions of deductions to your gross pay in Switzerland..

Since I got my hair cut today and am in a good mood, here are a couple you can browse:

I have a job offer of 155.000 CHF per year. Can I live with that money in Zurich?

Zurich Budget !!

How much do you spend a month EXCLUDING rent/housing costs?

and here are some more...

Re: Need help!! Yet another cost of living query for zurich Switzerland(research done

according to that web site,

170'000 CHF / 12 = 14166 CHF gross gives as a result:

(on 13 payments: 10711*12/13=9887 CHF)

Payroll:

Total deductions (24,39%) 3.454,86 CHF

OASI premium 729,55 CHF

ALV premium 7,08 CHF

Non-w. rel. a. premium 233,74 CHF

KTG premium 56,66 CHF

Pension Fund 964,48 CHF

Withholding tax 1.463,35 CHF

[QUOTE=ashswisslife;1654213]

The company has told him his net salary would be around 9600 chf per calendar month.

That is way above the average i guess and i think you can have a very comfortable lifestyle with that kind of take-home salary.

To move or not move need not always depend on how much you earn and the potential to save though. You will need to look at other aspects - i hope your research has covered those aspects as well.

There is a big difference between being enough for one in a tiny flat, and middle class lifestyle for 3 without a having a thrifty frame of mind.

To me Middle Class would mean a 3 bed semi, 2 cars, taxi from the airport, eating out once a week with a baby sitter, and a cleaner 1 morning a week. This is a country where a pair of shoes for a small child cost 70 to 120chf. Go and have a look. Baden is the only place you can get cheap kids clothes, perhaps as it is so close to Germany?

If you are getting a relocation package this will help a lot. Otherwise you are going to need more than a months salary for the deposit and first rent on the apartment for starters. Everything is multiplied up with a family, so unless you are a family of 3 or more, I don't think you are qualified to answer this.

Give me a break. They are moving to Zurich. No middle class family here is stupid enough to have two cars or take a taxi from the airport to the city. Public transportation system is just to good.

Their basic problem is to find an apartment in Zurich or outside with good S-Bahn connections etc. And those shoes you get cheaper anyway, too, if you just look around a little bit.

To you. Not to most residents here. I'm not sure that multiple car ownership and a house is what the Swiss would use to sinder themselves comfortably off.

About "eating out once a week with a baby sitter" - I do not think my wife would let me go out once a week with a baby sitter - like the idea though
